Chinese tech company MTT has released its MTT GPU series, featuring the S80 and S70 SKUs, in China, offering competitive prices for the 11.11 shopping festival but with limited gaming performance and power efficiency.
- The S80 supports PCIe Gen5 specifications and has 16GB of GDDR6 memory.
- MTT is offering the S80 GPU for 1199 RMB ($164) and the S70 for 899 RMB ($122).
- MTT may have an opportunity to establish a niche in the Chinese GPU market.
Chinese tech company MTT has released its MTT GPU series, featuring the S80 and S70 SKUs, in China. These gaming Graphics Cards support DirectX11 graphics API and boast impressive specifications on paper. The standout feature of the S80 is its support for PCIe Gen5 specifications and its 16GB of GDDR6 memory. However, when it comes to real-world performance, the S80 struggles to compete with older nVidia cards.
In preparation for the upcoming 11.11 shopping festival in China, MTT is offering the S80 GPU for 1199 RMB ($164) and the S70 for 899 RMB ($122). While these prices are competitive for new cards from a new company, neither card is a compelling choice for gaming purposes.
According to a review by PC Watch, the S80 falls significantly behind the GTX 1050 Ti in gaming performance and consumes three times as much power. MTT has also not addressed idle power consumption, making power efficiency and performance per watt more important considerations than price. Additionally, the GTX 1050 Ti can be found at a cheaper price in the second-hand market.
One advantage of the S80 is its 16GB memory capacity, which MTT promises to optimize for various professional workloads, including AI tasks. This could be a potential focus for MTT as it struggles to compete in the gaming market, even against a 30W GT 1030 GPU. Interestingly, the cost of 16GB of memory alone would be around $57, making up approximately one-third of the card’s total cost.
There have been rumors circulating that MTT is developing a new card, possibly called the S90, with an improved architecture. While the company has not officially confirmed this, traces found in public repositories suggest that such a card may be in the works. If the S90 outperforms the S80 and maintains a reasonable price point, MTT may have an opportunity to establish a niche in the Chinese GPU market, especially since these cards are not available in other regions.
