CableMod’s “12VHWPR” Angled Adapters Recalled: $74K Property Damages Reported

CableMod adapters have been at the center of a recent controversy, as the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued an official recall for over 25,300 units of angled adapters. The recall notice, discovered by HotHardware, states that these adapters are prone to causing damage and poses a risk to consumers.

According to the CPSC, CableMod has received 272 reports of these adapters becoming loose, overheating, and even melting into the graphics processing unit (GPU). This has resulted in an alarming $74,500 worth of property damage claims in the United States alone. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported thus far.

The recall encompasses all types of CableMod angled adapters, including the revised version (1.1) as well as the 90-degree and 180-degree variants. It’s important to note that this also includes reversed versions, as certain GPUs have power connectors rotated.

CableMod is taking responsibility for the issue and is committed to providing full refunds for the adapters, including shipping expenses. Alternatively, customers have the option to receive a $60 store credit for non-customized items at the official CableMod store. This recall applies to all purchases made between February and December 2023, whether directly from the store or through Amazon.

To prevent any potential damage, it is recommended to use native 12VHPWR cables provided by power supply companies whenever possible. If such cables are not available, users should consider using nVidia’s official cable adapters that come with every RTX 40 card or consult with their power supply manufacturer for suitable alternatives. Additionally, it is crucial to ensure that the cables are fully inserted to minimize any potential risks.

While CableMod has been actively addressing the issue on social media and forums by offering prompt replacements for damaged Graphics Cards, it is unfortunate that many affected users reported damage to their high-end RTX 4090 GPUs.
