Intel’s “New” Core i9-14900HX Falls Behind AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D in Gaming Performance

Intel recently launched its latest 14th-Gen Core HX processors at CES 2024, but it seems that their new flagship, the Core i9-14900HX, falls short in gaming performance compared to AMD’s Ryzen 9 7945HX3D. While the Core i9-14900HX offers some improvements over its predecessor, the Core i9-13900HX, it fails to match the power and efficiency of AMD’s offering.

The Core i9-14900HX features 8 P-Cores (Raptor Cove) and 16 E-Cores (Gracemont). The P-cores have a peak boost clock of 5.8GHz, up from 5.4GHz on the 13900HX, while the E-cores have been scaled from 3.9GHz to 4.1GHz. These frequency bumps, however, are not enough to compete with AMD’s Ryzen 9 7945HX3D.

Notebookcheck conducted gaming benchmarks comparing the Core i9-14900HX with the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D. The tests were performed on the Schenker XMG Neo 17 with an RTX 4090 mobile GPU. In almost every game tested, AMD’s Ryzen 9 7945HX3D outperformed Intel’s Core i9-14900HX. Titles like Cyberpunk 2077 and Shadow of the Tomb Raider showed significant differences, with the Ryzen CPU being 16% and 28% faster than Intel’s offering, respectively.

Not only does the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D outperform the Core i9-14900HX in gaming, but it also proves to be more power-efficient. In most games, the Ryzen CPU consumes less than 50W of power, while the Core i9-14900HX draws nearly 90W in the Cinebench R23 1T benchmark. In the multi-threaded test, the Core i9-14900HX records a power consumption of 223W, compared to just 158.5W on the Ryzen CPU.

These benchmarks clearly demonstrate that AMD’s Ryzen 9 7945HX3D is currently the superior choice for gamers. Its impressive gaming performance and power efficiency make it a compelling option for those looking to build a high-performance gaming rig.
