Synology, a leading provider of data management solutions, has recently launched BeeDrive, a compact data hub designed to simplify and enhance the backup process for personal files and photos. With BeeDrive, users can effortlessly backup their files from their computer, phone, and tablet simultaneously, ensuring complete data privacy and ownership.
The rapid growth of personal data, especially with the increasing quality of cameras and new photo or video formats, has led to a shortage of storage space on our devices and in the cloud. Additionally, slow internet upload speeds have made it more time-consuming and costly to store files in the cloud or transfer them between personal devices. Recognizing these challenges, Synology aims to provide a local, private alternative with BeeDrive.
David Hu, product manager at Synology Inc., explains, “Every one of us is generating an unprecedented amount of data on various personal devices today. Internet upload speeds never caught up with the explosive growth in personal data, making it increasingly slower and more costly to store all our files in the cloud, especially if we just want to back up or archive old files elsewhere or exchange files between our personal devices. This is why we want to offer a local, private alternative.”
BeeDrive offers a hassle-free solution for users of all levels of technical expertise. Once connected to a PC, users can select which folders they want to protect, and BeeDrive will automatically back up any changes in real-time. This provides a better recovery point objective (RPO) than scheduled hourly backups. In the event of a computer failure, users can simply connect BeeDrive to another computer and access their files immediately without the need for software installation or a time-consuming recovery process.
In addition to PC backup, BeeDrive also supports the backup of photos and videos from iOS and Android devices over Wi-Fi. By keeping the BeeDrive-connected PC and mobile devices on the same network, users can easily scan a QR code to initiate the backup process and free up space on their phones.
BeeDrive overcomes the bandwidth limitations imposed by internet or cloud service providers, offering backup speeds that are 11 times faster than backing up large files to the cloud from a PC and six times faster from mobile devices.
For professionals who frequently take photos on their phones and need to access them on their PCs, BeeDrive’s BeeDrop feature allows for wireless transfer of mobile-generated content from iOS and Android devices to BeeDrive. This eliminates the need for uploading and downloading files from the cloud.
Furthermore, BeeDrive facilitates file synchronization between work and home computers. By simply plugging BeeDrive into each computer, users can ensure that all files are always up-to-date on the computer they are working on while maintaining a second copy on BeeDrive.
Looking ahead, Synology plans to leverage the computing resources of a computer to help users extract more value from their data, such as through auto-categorization. The company remains committed to delivering modern technologies to its users without compromising data privacy and ownership.
BeeDrive is currently available in 1TB and 2TB capacities for Windows, iOS, and Android through Synology partners and resellers worldwide. macOS support is planned for a later date. For more information about BeeDrive, visit the Synology website.
