Synology has announced the Beta release of DiskStation Manager (DSM) 7.1, offering system administrators an improved storage management experience, optimized user interface, enhanced performance, complete bare-metal level backups, and major improvements to applications and services.
- Improved storage management experience
- Optimized user interface
- Improved performance with SSD caching
Synology, a leading data management platform provider, has announced the Beta release of DiskStation Manager (DSM) 7.1. This latest release builds on the success of DSM 7.0 and offers system administrators an opportunity to test out the expanded functionality.
One of the key enhancements in DSM 7.1 is the improved storage management experience. The introduction of file aggregation portals allows administrators to link multiple Synology systems using SMB DFS capability. This eliminates the need for users to remember separate addresses, making file access more convenient.
The user interface has also been optimized in DSM 7.1, with background tasks consolidated into an administrator-friendly overview. This provides greater transparency into system activities across different user accounts. For Synology High Availability clusters, users can now view and manage drives on both systems from a single instance of Storage Manager, simplifying maintenance and management.
In terms of performance, DSM has long supported flash caching to boost random I/O performance cost-effectively. With DSM 7.1, SSD caching has been further improved to speed up multiple storage volumes simultaneously.
Another major feature introduced in DSM 7.1 is complete, bare-metal level backups of the entire system. Powered by Synology Active Backup for Business, this capability allows for quick recovery in the event of a total site failure. It also enables the deployment of identically configured systems with ease.
In addition to these core enhancements, Synology is launching several major improvements to its applications and services alongside DSM 7.1. These include bandwidth control, expanded monitoring and reporting capabilities, and support for DSM backups in Active Backup for Business. Other enhancements include centralized login activity monitoring and Hyper Backup task statuses in Active Insight, server-side snapshots for better file protection in Synology C2 Hybrid Share, support for read-only domain controllers in Directory Server, a revamped mobile user experience and improved monitoring/auditing capabilities in Synology Drive, and virtual DSM support, expanded management options, and importing and migration improvements in MailPlus and Virtual Machine Manager.
Synology’s pre-release program allows customers to have early access to new features and provide valuable feedback. The DSM 7.1 Beta and companion applications and services are now available as part of this program. Interested users are encouraged to install the pre-release software on non-production or virtualized systems.

Technology Explained
SSD: A Solid State Drive (SSD) is a modern data storage device that employs flash memory technology to store data electronically. Unlike traditional hard disk drives (HDDs), SSDs have no moving parts, resulting in significantly faster read and write speeds. This leads to quicker boot times, faster application loading, and smoother overall system performance. SSDs are known for their durability, shock resistance, and energy efficiency, making them ideal for laptops, ultrabooks, and other portable devices. They come in various form factors, including 2.5-inch, M.2, and PCIe cards, and are favored for their reliability, quiet operation, and reduced heat generation
