Synology Enhances System Reliability and Efficiency with DSM 7.2.2 Update

Synology, a leading provider of network-attached storage (NAS) solutions, has recently released DiskStation Manager (DSM) 7.2.2. This latest update focuses on improving system reliability and enhancing the efficiency of media file processing. With a commitment to enhancing the user experience, Synology has dedicated significant resources to re-engineering DSM, supporting packages, and mobile apps to make them more scalable and dependable.

One of the key highlights of DSM 7.2.2 is its comprehensive enhancements to system reliability. Businesses can now benefit from a faster full-system restoration from C2 Storage via Hyper Backup, reducing business recovery time objectives (RTO) by four times compared to previous versions. Hybrid Share folders and data transfer activities have also been made more resilient after abnormal server power events. Additionally, the availability of single sign-on (SSO) login has been improved by enhancing compatibility with Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory).

Data security has also been strengthened in DSM 7.2.2. The update enhances the file system’s capabilities in automatically repairing bitflip errors, ensuring data integrity. The reliability of adaptive multi-factor authentication has also been improved, providing an added layer of security. Furthermore, the security of immutable snapshots has been fortified by addressing a potential risk that allowed snapshots to be unlocked through manual attribute changes by administrators.

In terms of media processing efficiency, DSM 7.2.2 introduces a strategic shift by offloading media processing to clients and mobile devices. This leverages the widespread media decoding and encoding capabilities of these devices, reducing unnecessary server resource usage. By simply installing the Synology Image Assistant Extension and desktop app, users can now experience a thumbnail processing performance that is 2.5 times faster compared to server-side processing. This performance improvement scales as the number of concurrent users increases.

DSM 7.2.2 is now available for download. For more detailed information on the updates, please refer to the release notes. Synology continues to prioritize user experience and aims to provide a more dependable business platform with each update.

Note: Testing conducted by Synology using DSM 7.2.2 and Synology Photos to convert 80 images, totaling 153MB, into thumbnails. The server used was a DS224+ (J4125), and the client device is equipped with an i5-7400 3GHz processor.

Technology Explained

NAS: Network Attached Storage (NAS) is a specialized storage device or server that provides centralized data storage and access over a network, usually using Ethernet connections. NAS systems are designed to offer a convenient and efficient way to store and share files among multiple users or devices within a home or office environment. Unlike traditional storage solutions, NAS devices operate independently and have their own operating systems and management interfaces. They are characterized by easy setup and configuration, making them accessible even to users with limited technical expertise. NAS devices can offer various features, including data redundancy through RAID configurations, remote access over the internet, automatic backup, media streaming, and even application hosting in some advanced models. As a versatile and user-friendly storage solution, NAS has become a popular choice for both personal and small business use.
