Recently, reports have emerged regarding a flaw in Intel’s 13th and 14th Gen Core i9-13900K/14900k processors, and it seems that the issue is more widespread than initially thought.

Both the 13900KF and Core i7-14700KF suffered from PCIe x16 dGPU expansion lane issues, causing them to refuse booting in x16 or even x8 mode. In an attempt to address the issue, Hardware Times obtained a replacement chip through Intel’s RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) process. However, to their dismay, the new Core i9-13900KF exhibited the same problem. When the graphics card was installed on the primary dGPU slot, the CPU simply refused to boot. Connecting the GPU to the chipset slot did allow for booting, but it limited the system to PCIe Gen 4 x4 mode instead of the desired x8 or x16.

To ensure that the issue was not isolated to a specific motherboard, Hardware Times tested three different models: the ASUS ROG Z790 Maximus Hero, the ROG B760 Strix WiFi, and the MSI PRO Z790P WiFi. Unfortunately, all three motherboards displayed the same symptoms, confirming that the problem lies within the processor itself.

The frustration experienced by Hardware Times is understandable. Having an RMA’d chip fail within just two months of delivery is not only disappointing but also raises concerns about the overall quality control of Intel’s manufacturing process.
