Intel’s Lunar Lake processors set to launch in Q3 2024, promising groundbreaking performance.

Intel’s upcoming client processors, code-named Lunar Lake, are set to power over 80 new laptop designs from more than 20 original equipment manufacturers starting in Q3 2024. These processors will deliver AI performance on a global scale for Copilot+ PCs. Lunar Lake will also receive the Copilot+ experiences, such as Recall, through an update when available. With the addition of Lunar Lake, Intel aims to ship over 40 million AI PC processors this year.

According to Michelle Johnston Holthaus, Intel’s executive vice president and general manager of the Client Computing Group, Lunar Lake and Copilot+ will provide the most competitive joint client hardware and software offering in Intel’s history. This is due to breakthrough power efficiency, compatibility with x86 architecture, and a wide range of software enablement across the CPU, GPU, and NPU.

An AI PC consists of a CPU, GPU, and NPU, each with specific AI acceleration capabilities. The NPU is a specialized accelerator that handles AI and machine learning tasks directly on the PC, eliminating the need to send data to the cloud for processing. The AI PC is becoming increasingly important as the demand for automating, streamlining, and optimizing tasks on the PC grows.

Lunar Lake is expected to be a groundbreaking mobile processor for AI PCs, offering over three times the AI performance compared to the previous generation. With over 40 NPU tera operations per second (TOPS), Intel’s next-generation processors will provide the necessary capabilities for Copilot+ experiences. Lunar Lake will also feature over 60 GPU TOPS, delivering more than 100 platform TOPS.

Pavan Davuluri, corporate vice president of Windows + Devices at Microsoft, expressed excitement about Lunar Lake’s launch and its 40+ TOPS NPU, which will enable Microsoft’s Copilot+ experiences at scale. Intel’s AI PC Acceleration Program includes collaboration with over 100 independent software vendors to enhance AI PC experiences across various applications such as personal assistants, audio effects, content creation, gaming, security, streaming, and video collaboration.
