Western Digital Corp. is expanding its SanDisk portfolio with the introduction of the new 8 TB SanDisk Desk Drive, the company’s highest capacity external desktop solid state drive (SSD) to date. This new class of drives combines the speed and reliability of an SSD, providing content creators and business professionals with a convenient way to back up and access their high-resolution photos, videos, and files quickly.
With the rise of digital content creation, there is a growing need for high-performing and high-capacity storage solutions. Western Digital aims to address this demand by expanding its SSD portfolio, offering creators backup solutions that deliver the speed and flexibility they require to unlock their creativity. In fact, the company plans to double the capacity of the SanDisk Desk Drive from 8 TB to 16 TB on a single desktop SSD by next year.
The key features of the SanDisk Desk Drive include impressive capacities of 4 TB and 8 TB, making it suitable for storing photo and video collections, CAD files or 3D renders, large AI-generated files, music libraries, important documents, and more. Its performance is also noteworthy, with read speeds of up to 1,000 MB/s, making it up to four times faster than a desktop HDD. This means that even heavy files like 8K videos can be accessed quickly.
In terms of backup capabilities, the SanDisk Desk Drive allows users to quickly back up their photos, videos, and files with SSD speeds using Apple Time Machine. Additionally, users have the option to make backups automatic with the included downloadable Acronis True Image for Western Digital backup software.
Design-wise, the SanDisk Desk Drive features a compact and modern style that has been recognized with a 2024 Red Dot Design Award. This not only maximizes desk space but also blends seamlessly into any professional or home setting.
In terms of compatibility, the SanDisk Desk Drive works out of the box with both Windows and macOS, thanks to its exFAT formatting. It comes with an included USB Type-C cable for easy connectivity.
The 4 TB SanDisk Desk Drive is priced at $379.99, while the 8 TB version is priced at $699.99. Both drives come with a three-year limited warranty and are available for purchase now at the Western Digital Store, as well as authorized SanDisk retailers, e-tailers, and distributors.

Technology Explained
HDD: A Hard Disk Drive (HDD) is a classic data storage device that utilizes spinning disks, or platters, coated with a magnetic material to store and retrieve data. An actuator arm with read/write heads accesses data by moving over the spinning platters. HDDs offer large storage capacities at a comparatively lower cost per gigabyte, making them suitable for applications where massive data storage is required, such as servers and desktop computers. However, HDDs are slower in terms of read and write speeds compared to SSDs due to the mechanical nature of their operation. They are more susceptible to physical shocks and are less energy-efficient due to the need to constantly spin the platters.

SSD: A Solid State Drive (SSD) is a modern data storage device that employs flash memory technology to store data electronically. Unlike traditional hard disk drives (HDDs), SSDs have no moving parts, resulting in significantly faster read and write speeds. This leads to quicker boot times, faster application loading, and smoother overall system performance. SSDs are known for their durability, shock resistance, and energy efficiency, making them ideal for laptops, ultrabooks, and other portable devices. They come in various form factors, including 2.5-inch, M.2, and PCIe cards, and are favored for their reliability, quiet operation, and reduced heat generation
