AMD has announced the release of FidelityFX Super Resolution 3.1, an update to its existing FSR technology for Radeon RX 6000 and 7000-series Graphics Cards. This new version brings several improvements, including enhanced upscaling quality, decoupling of frame generation from AMD’s upscaling, and improved developer accessibility.
One of the key enhancements in FSR 3.1 is its improved temporal upscaling image quality. Compared to FSR 2.2, the new version significantly reduces flickering and ghosting artifacts, providing a smoother and more visually appealing experience. These improvements are particularly important as flickering and ghosting can be quite distracting for gamers. The first game to support FSR 3.1 is expected to be Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, set to release later this year.
Another notable development in FSR 3.1 is its decoupling from the Frame Generation feature introduced in FSR 3. This feature utilizes AMD’s Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) optical flow interpolation to add an additional frame between existing frames, resulting in improved performance. Previously, this capability was limited to FSR 3 upscaling, but with FSR 3.1, it can be used with other upscaling methods as well. However, AMD has not provided specific details on which methods and hardware will be compatible. The company has also not disclosed when game developers are expected to implement this feature.
