AMD Ryzen 5 8600G Gaming Benchmarks: iGPU Performance and Fluid Motion Frames Put to the Test

Last week, we had the opportunity to review the AMD Ryzen 5 8600G, a powerful processor that combines the mobility Zen 4 core with the Radeon 760M graphics. Priced at $229, this processor offers impressive performance for its value. In this article, we will delve into the gaming benchmarks of the Ryzen 5 8600G, specifically focusing on its integrated GPU (iGPU) performance and the impact of Fluid Motion Frames.

Compared to its predecessor, the Ryzen 5 7600X, the Ryzen 5 8600G features less L3 cache, with 16MB compared to 32MB. However, this reduction in cache size allows for the inclusion of a potent iGPU and an NPU unit that powers Ryzen AI technologies. Our testing unit was paired with the MSI B650 Gaming WiFi motherboard and 32GB DDR5-6400 DC memory (16GB x2).

To evaluate the gaming performance of the Ryzen 5 8600G, we tested six popular titles of 2023 at 1080p using low-quality graphics settings. In-game FSR 2 was enabled wherever available, with the “Balanced” mode selected. The results were impressive, with an average FPS (frames per second) ranging from 50 to 70, and 1% lows exceeding 35 FPS. The power consumption of the CPU + iGPU combination stayed under 90W, averaging between 83W and 87W in most cases.

One of the highlights of our testing was the use of Fluid Motion Frames on the Radeon 760M. This feature measures frame generation performance and provides smoother gameplay experiences. However, it was not as convenient to measure as we had hoped. AFMF (AMD Fluid Motion Frames) does not yet support Intel Presentmon, which is the basis for popular benchmarking tools like CapFrameX. As a result, we had to rely on driver-reported data from Excel files.

For F1 2022, we achieved an average FPS of 67.5 at 1080p with in-game FSR 2. Enabling AFMF significantly boosted the average framerate to around 132 FPS, with lows of over 80 FPS during most of the benchmark. Similarly, in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, we obtained an average FPS of 69 using the “Low” preset at 1080p with in-game FSR. Enabling AFMF pushed the average FPS to approximately 110, a remarkable 60% improvement over native performance.

Hitman 3 also showcased the capabilities of the Ryzen 5 8600G, averaging close to 90 FPS at 1080p with FSR 2. Enabling AFMF further increased the frame rate by 44%, reaching around 130 FPS with 99 percentiles of 80 FPS in most scenes. Even in the demanding Cyberpunk 2077, known for its optimization, we achieved an average FPS of 50.7 using in-game FSR 2.1 (Balanced). With the addition of Fluid Motion Frame Generation, the framerate soared to 85 FPS, with lows ranging from 50 to 60 FPS.

The combination of AMD Fluid Motion Frames and Ryzen 8000G processors, such as the Ryzen 5 8600G, offers a compelling gaming experience. The Ryzen 5 8600G performs on par with modern hex-core processors, while the integrated Radeon 760M delivers unprecedented performance gains in budget and small form factor gaming setups. With a simple switch, gamers can achieve a solid 60 FPS in nearly every game at 1080p on “Medium” settings and sometimes even “High.”

In conclusion, the AMD Ryzen 5 8600G impresses with its iGPU performance and the added benefits of Fluid Motion Frames.
