AMD's Threadripper 7000 series has set a new world record with a Cinebench R23 score of 148,719, achieved through extreme overclocking with liquid nitrogen cooling and a 4.4 GHz boost clock across all 96 cores.

  • Threadripper 7000 series offers support for up to 96 Zen4 cores
  • Achieved a Cinebench R23 score of 148,719, surpassing the previous world record
  • Achieved an impressive 8,052 points in Cinebench 2024, outperforming the current record holder by 31%

AMD Threadripper has set a new world record by breaking a Cinebench R23 score of 148,719. The company recently invited members of the media to its headquarters for a public demo of the new Threadripper platform, which included a successful extreme overclocking attempt.

There seemed to be some confusion regarding the review and performance embargo for the Threadripper 7000 series. Media attendees were instructed not to publish any benchmarks until the official launch on November 21st. However, it appears that some data may have leaked unintentionally or intentionally.

The highly anticipated Threadripper 7000 series from AMD has been in the works for quite some time, with rumors circulating even before the introduction of Zen4. AMD took its time with the release, as they already had a strong Zen4 desktop lineup with up to 16 cores and support for PCIe Gen5 and DDR5 standards. However, Intel’s launch of the Sapphire Rapids-WS platform seemed to have pushed AMD to respond, and respond they did.

The Threadripper 7000 series will offer support for up to 96 Zen4 cores and will be divided into PRO and non-PRO series. The PRO lineup will exclusively feature the 96-core version, while other variants with 64, 32, 16, and even 12 cores will be available.

A review by PCMag of the new Dell platform featuring the flagship 96-core CPU, Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7995WX, confirmed the impressive performance figures highlighted in AMD’s marketing materials. In a Cinebench R23 benchmark test, the Threadripper CPU outperformed the Intel Xeon W9-3495X by a significant margin, with an 80% increase in performance. It also surpassed the previous generation Threadripper by 58%.

During a live demonstration at AMD headquarters, an overclocking session took place. While specific performance figures were not authorized to be disclosed, a screenshot obtained from the session confirmed the achieved score and revealed the use of liquid nitrogen cooling. The CPU was overclocked to sustain a 4.4 GHz boost clock across all 96 cores, demanding over 620 watts of power. Notably, the CPU supports overclocking through Ryzen Master, allowing for a maximum power limit of up to 1000 watts.

With a score of 148,719, the Threadripper has successfully surpassed the previous world record of 147,668 achieved with a dual EPYC 9654 setup. Additionally, it achieved an impressive 8,052 points in Cinebench 2024, outperforming the current record holder, the Xeon W9-3495, by 1,893 points (a 31% difference). This achievement marks a significant comeback for AMD in the high-end desktop segment.

Unfortunately, achieving similar scores won’t be possible for everyday AMD users due to the high cost of the CPU, priced at $9,999. Furthermore, any attempts at overclocking would void the warranty.
