- The absolute maximum power limit, known as PL4, has also seen a significant reduction.
Intel’s 15th Gen processors are generating excitement in the tech world with their impressive power consumption improvements. Leaked information reveals that the upcoming Arrow Lake-S platform will offer a significant efficiency boost compared to its predecessors.
Before diving into the details, let’s take a quick look at Intel’s roadmap. The 14th Gen Meteor Lake processors are primarily targeted at the premium notebook market. However, for those in the DIY segment, Intel has introduced the Raptor Lake Refresh as a temporary solution until the 15th Gen Arrow Lake-S CPUs arrive in late 2025. Arrow Lake is expected to be a combination of Intel’s “Tick” and “Tock” microarchitectures, promising enhanced performance and efficiency.
Thanks to Darkmont, we now have access to leaked power values for the 15th Gen Arrow Lake-S platform. The base power limit, known as PL1, will be set at 125W, which is consistent with the existing 12th and 13th Gen K-series parts. However, the real excitement lies in the reduction of the boost clock power limit, or PL2, for the Core i9-15900K. Compared to its predecessor, the 13900K, the PL2 limit has been reduced by a staggering 43%, from 253W to 177W. This reduction is made possible by the advancement of Intel’s 20A process, which is two nodes ahead of their current Intel 7 process.
Furthermore, the absolute maximum power limit, known as PL4, has also seen a significant reduction. The 15th Gen Arrow Lake-S platform will have a PL4 limit of 333W, which is 26% lower than the 420W limit of the 13900K. It’s worth noting that AMD’s AM5 platform, which will be a competitor to Intel’s Arrow Lake-S, has a TDP of 170W and a peak PPT of 230W. These leaked power recommendations are specifically for a mini-PC, so it’s reasonable to assume that the stock values for desktop systems will be slightly higher.
Speaking of mini-PCs, Intel’s NUC 13 Extreme features the same TDP range as the Core i9-13900K, suggesting that the leaked power values may indeed be the stock desktop recommendations. This is great news for enthusiasts who are eagerly awaiting Intel’s next-generation processors.
In terms of specifications, the Arrow Lake-S platform will be focused on desktop usage and will support up to 24 cores, with options for both 8P and 16E configurations. The processors will utilize the LGA1851 socket and 800-series chipsets. Intel’s 2nm-class 20A node will be responsible for fabricating the compute or CPU tile, while the SoC, I/O, and GPU tiles will be retained from the previous Meteor Lake architecture. This modular “chiplet” design will incorporate five disaggregated dies fabricated across multiple process nodes, including TSMC’s N6, N4, and Intel’s own 16 process.
In addition to the advancements in process technology and platform upgrades, Intel’s 15th Gen family will introduce new core architectures. The current “Redwood Cove” P-core will be succeeded by Lion Cove, while the “Crestmont” E-core will make way for Skymont. These new microarchitectures are expected to bring significant improvements in instructions per cycle (IPC), further enhancing the overall performance of Intel’s processors.
Overall, Intel’s 15th Gen Arrow Lake-S platform is shaping up to be an exciting release for PC enthusiasts. With impressive power consumption improvements and advancements in core architectures, these processors have the potential to deliver a significant performance boost. As we eagerly await their official launch in late 2025, it’s clear that Intel is determined to reclaim its position as a leader in the CPU market.
