Intel Releases Initial Microcode Update for Raptor Lake Stability Concern, BIOS Rollout Underway

Intel has finally released the much-anticipated microcode fix for the stability issues plaguing its Raptor Lake processors. This update, version 0x129, aims to address the problem of elevated voltage that has been causing degradation in these processors over the past year and a half. Intel has been diligently investigating this issue and has made significant progress in recent weeks.

The underlying cause of the problem has been identified as an “elevated operating voltage” issue in high-TDP desktop Raptor Lake chips. Intel has been working towards a solution and had initially planned to release a microcode patch in mid-August. True to their word, Intel has started shipping the microcode to their motherboard partners just ahead of the deadline.

However, it’s important to note that this microcode release is not the final solution to the stability issue. Intel is still actively investigating ways to improve the stability of already-degraded processors. The company is treating this microcode fix as a beta software solution and will not be distributing it through operating system updates. This suggests that Intel is working towards a more comprehensive fix that can be widely released in the future.

So, what does this microcode update actually do? It limits the voltage of affected Raptor Lake desktop chips to a maximum of 1.55v, which is within the proper limit determined by Intel. The issue stems from excessive voltages, and capping them at the appropriate level should prevent further damage to the chips.

In addition to the microcode release, Intel has provided a detailed explanation of the problem. Degraded chips have experienced a shift in the minimum voltage needed to operate, known as Vmin, which has increased beyond Intel’s original specifications. As a result, these chips are not receiving enough voltage to function properly. This phenomenon is similar to how overclocked processors degrade over time.

While the degradation of these chips may be irreversible, there is a glimmer of hope. Intel believes that degraded Raptor Lake chips can still operate correctly with a higher Vmin voltage. This “Vmin shift” is the focus of Intel’s ongoing investigation, and they aim to provide updates on this matter by the end of August.

Motherboard partners such as ASUS and MSI have already started releasing BIOS updates with the new microcode, although Intel had not officially announced it at the time. These updates are considered beta versions, reflecting the early stage of the microcode fix. It is advisable to approach these beta BIOSes with caution.

It’s worth noting that Intel is currently distributing the 0x129 microcode exclusively through BIOS updates and not via operating system updates. While the ultimate goal is to distribute the fix through OS updates, Intel has not provided a timeline or further guidance on when that will happen. For now, a BIOS update is the only way to obtain the microcode.

In terms of performance impact, Intel’s internal testing indicates that there is generally no significant loss in performance with the new microcode. However, there are a few workloads, such as PugetBench GPU Effects Score and Hitman 3: Dartmoor, where some performance regressions have been observed. Overall, the fix does not lead to widespread performance losses.

As for AnandTech, they will be conducting their own benchmark tests when time allows. With another CPU launch on the horizon, they have their hands full in the coming days.
