Samsung Electronics has announced a significant achievement in its collaboration with Intel, as the companies successfully completed the industry’s first end-to-end call in a lab environment. This milestone involved using a future Intel Xeon processor, codenamed Granite Rapids-D, on a virtualized Open RAN network powered by Samsung’s vRAN 3.0.
The test, conducted in Samsung’s R&D lab in Korea, utilized Samsung’s versatile and O-RAN-compliant virtualized RAN (vRAN) integrated with Intel’s Granite Rapids-D, as well as Samsung’s Core and test devices. The results of the test demonstrated significant gains in performance and reduced power consumption.
This achievement is a testament to the long-standing collaboration between Samsung and Intel on vRAN, which began in 2017. Together, the companies have successfully deployed large-scale vRAN solutions with Tier-1 operators. They have also worked together on previous generations of Intel’s processors to advance vRAN technology.
The successful completion of this call on Granite Rapids-D, even before its general availability, highlights the close collaboration and innovation between Samsung and Intel. Cristina Rodriguez, VP and GM of Intel’s Wireless Access Networking Division, praised the achievement as a reflection of the companies’ commitment to driving their multi-generational Intel Xeon processor roadmap.
In addition to integrating Samsung vRAN software on Granite Rapids-D, the two companies are also collaborating on AI innovations for radio networks. This collaboration aims to enable potential future use cases in RAN, such as power optimization, traffic steering, improved spectral efficiency, and anomaly detection.
Samsung has been at the forefront of delivering 5G end-to-end solutions, including chipsets, radios, and core components. Through ongoing research and development, the company continues to drive advancements in 5G networks with its market-leading product portfolio, which includes vRAN 3.0, Open RAN, Core solutions, private network solutions, and AI-powered automation tools. Samsung’s network solutions currently provide connectivity to hundreds of millions of users worldwide.
The test results will be showcased at Mobile World Congress 2024, at the Samsung Networks booth, by invitation only. This technical achievement demonstrates Samsung’s commitment to expanding its ecosystem with industry-leading partners like Intel and embracing a virtual and open approach to unlock the full potential of mobile networks for the future.
