Samsung Electronics has announced its participation as a founding member of the AI-RAN Alliance, an organization that aims to promote 6G innovation through the combination of AI technology and wireless communication technology. The alliance, which was officially launched at Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona 2024, consists of eleven organizations including Samsung, ARM, Ericsson, Microsoft, Nokia, nVidia, SoftBank, and Northeastern University.

The AI-RAN Alliance will collaborate on the development of new technologies and their application to commercial products in preparation for the upcoming 6G era. The goal is to revolutionize the way people interact with technology by leveraging AI capabilities. Charlie Zhang, Senior Vice President at Samsung Research America, believes that this collaboration will create new value for end users and operators through AI-based use cases and innovations.

To achieve its objectives, the AI-RAN Alliance has established three working groups: AI for RAN, AI and RAN, and AI on RAN. These groups will focus on various aspects of AI and wireless communication technologies, including improving spectrum, cost, and energy efficiency, resource management, infrastructure utilization, and discovering new AI applications and services in wireless networks. The results of their research will contribute to the standardization and commercialization of 6G in the future.

Samsung plans to leverage its position as a leader in AI and wireless communication solutions to drive technological convergence and service innovation. The company has been at the forefront of 6G research since establishing the Advanced Communications Research Center (ACRC) in 2019. Samsung Research has published white papers on 6G technology and hosted the Samsung 6G Forum to showcase its commitment to next-generation communication research and development.

Samsung Research envisions AI-Native as a key attribute of future 6G networks. With AI seamlessly integrated into the system functionality, the network will offer improved capacity, coverage, automation, and energy efficiency.
