SK hynix Inc. reports a significant turnaround in its financial performance, driven by improved market conditions and a focus on high-performance products, with plans to continue strengthening its technological leadership and expanding into new markets.

  • Significant milestone in financial performance
  • Improved market conditions and increased demand for products
  • Focus on high-performance, high-capacity products and technological leadership in AI memory space

SK hynix Inc., a leading global semiconductor supplier, has reported a significant milestone in its financial performance. After four consecutive quarters of losses, the company recorded an operating profit of 346 billion won in the fourth quarter of 2023, signaling a recovery in the memory chip market.

The positive results were driven by improved market conditions, particularly in the AI server and mobile applications sectors. Demand for SK hynix’s products increased, leading to a rise in average selling prices. The company’s efforts to prioritize profitability also contributed to the turnaround.

For the entire year of 2023, SK hynix reported an operating loss of 7.73 trillion won and a net loss of 9.14 trillion won. However, the fourth-quarter results helped narrow these losses. The company’s main products, DDR5 and HBM3, experienced substantial growth compared to the previous year, thanks to SK hynix’s market-leading technology in the DRAM space.

Looking ahead, SK hynix plans to continue its momentum by focusing on high-performance, high-capacity products such as DDR5 and LPDDR5T to meet the increasing demand for advanced DRAM in server and mobile markets. The company will also proceed with mass production of HBM3E, its main AI memory product, and continue developing HBM4.

In addition, SK hynix aims to strengthen its technological leadership by introducing new products like the high-capacity server module MCRDIMM and mobile module LPCAMM2. These innovations will cater to the growing demand for AI servers and on-device AI adoption.

In the NAND space, where recovery has been relatively slow, SK hynix plans to enhance profitability and stabilize the business by expanding sales of premium products such as eSSD.

Looking forward to 2024, SK hynix will prioritize improving profitability and efficiency through the sales of value-added products. The company aims to maintain a stable operation while minimizing capital expenditure.

Kim Woohyun, Vice President and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at SK hynix, expressed satisfaction with the company’s turnaround. He emphasized SK hynix’s technological leadership in the AI memory space and its readiness to become a total AI memory provider. As the industry enters a new era, SK hynix aims to lead the way by driving changes and offering customized solutions.

Technology Explained

DDR5: DDR5 (Double Data Rate 5) is the next generation of memory technology for the computer industry. It is a modern day improvement on earlier DDR technologies, with faster speeds, greater bandwidth and higher capacities. DDR5 enables higher resolution, seamless gaming experiences and faster data transfer rates, making it an ideal choice for high-performance computing and 4K gaming. With its greater RAM compatibility, DDR5 provides faster buffering times and raised clock speeds, giving users an improved overall work system. DDR5 is also optimized for multi-tasking, allowing users to multitask without experiencing a significant drop in performance, increasing the productivity of digital tasks. As an ever-evolving technology, DDR5 is paving the way for the computer industry into a new and powerful era.

HBM3E: HBM3E is the latest generation of high-bandwidth memory (HBM), a type of DRAM that is designed for artificial intelligence (AI) applications. HBM3E offers faster data transfer rates, higher density, and lower power consumption than previous HBM versions. HBM3E is developed by SK Hynix, a South Korean chipmaker, and is expected to enter mass production in 2024. HBM3E can achieve a speed of 1.15 TB/s and a capacity of 64 GB per stack. HBM3E is suitable for AI systems that require large amounts of data processing, such as deep learning, machine learning, and computer vision.

NAND: NAND technology is a type of non-volatile memory that is used in many computer applications. It is a type of flash memory that is used to store data in a non-volatile manner, meaning that the data is not lost when the power is turned off. NAND technology is used in many computer applications, such as solid-state drives, USB flash drives, digital cameras, and memory cards. It is also used in many embedded systems, such as cell phones, tablets, and other consumer electronics. NAND technology is a reliable and cost-effective way to store data, making it a popular choice for many computer applications.
