SK hynix Inc. reported a 24% revenue growth and 38% reduction in operating losses in the third quarter of 2023, driven by increased demand for high-performance memory chips and strategic investments in HBM, DDR5, and LPDDR5.
- 24% growth in revenues compared to the previous quarter
- 38% reduction in operating losses compared to the previous quarter
- Strong demand for flagship mobile products and HBM3, a crucial component for AI applications
SK hynix Inc., a leading semiconductor manufacturer, has released its financial results for the third quarter of 2023. The company reported revenues of 9.066 trillion won, operating losses of 1.792 trillion won, and net losses of 2.185 trillion won during this period. While these numbers may seem discouraging, SK hynix remains optimistic about its recovery trajectory, citing increased demand for high-performance memory chips as a key driver.
Compared to the previous quarter, SK hynix experienced a 24% growth in revenues and a 38% reduction in operating losses. This positive trend can be attributed to the strong demand for flagship mobile products and HBM3, a crucial component for AI applications, as well as high-capacity DDR5. Of particular note is the turnaround in the DRAM business, which had faced two consecutive quarters of losses. SK hynix credits this improvement to higher shipments of both DRAM and NAND, coupled with a rise in the average selling price.
DRAM shipments saw a 20% increase compared to the previous quarter, driven by robust sales of high-performance server applications and AI products. Additionally, the average selling price for DRAM rose by 10%. NAND shipments also experienced growth, led by high-capacity mobile and solid-state drive products.
Looking ahead, SK hynix anticipates further improvements in the DRAM business, fueled by the rising popularity of generative AI technology. The NAND space is also showing signs of steady recovery. As global memory providers reduce production and customers replenish their inventories, semiconductor prices are beginning to stabilize.
To meet evolving market demands, SK hynix plans to increase investments in high-value flagship products like HBM, DDR5, and LPDDR5. The company aims to ramp up production of these products using the fourth and fifth generations of the 10 nm process, known as 1anm and 1bnm, respectively. Additionally, SK hynix will focus on expanding investments in HBM and TSV technologies.
Kim Woohyun, the CFO of SK hynix, emphasized the company’s strong position in the future AI infrastructure and its leadership in the high-performance memory market. With products like HBM and DDR5, SK hynix aims to explore new markets and solidify its position as a premier provider of high-performance, premium memory products.
Overall, SK hynix’s financial results for the third quarter may have been challenging, but the company’s strategic moves and positive market trends indicate a promising path forward.
