Helldivers 2’s Deputy Director Explores Revolutionary Warbond System in Exclusive Interview

In the highly anticipated sequel to Helldivers, aptly named Helldivers 2, players will have the opportunity to fully gear up for the intergalactic war with the help of the Warbond system. We had the chance to sit down with Sagar Beroshi, Deputy Game Director, who shed some light on this exciting new feature.

Describing the Warbonds as “a treasure chest full of toys,” Beroshi emphasized their significance in shaping the gameplay experience. Not only do they offer a wide range of unlockable gear, but they also reflect the evolving nature of the war on Super Earth. As Beroshi explained, “Super Earth’s military-industrial complex is back in action after a century, and who better to equip than the Helldivers?”

Each item available through the Warbond system boasts unique features that can greatly impact gameplay tactics. Beroshi teased, “Players can expect some truly innovative items that provide different approaches to tackling missions. So get ready to suit up, drop in, and obliterate the enemy scum.”

But how exactly do these Warbonds work? The system allows players access to multiple pages of unlockable content, which can be obtained in a couple of ways. While the first Warbond, aptly named Helldivers Mobilize, is generously gifted by Super Earth, additional Premium Warbonds can be unlocked using Super Credits. These credits can either be purchased from the in-game store or discovered during missions by exploring points of interest. Once a Warbond is obtained, players can spend their hard-earned medals to unlock their desired gear. Medals are earned by completing objectives, missions, and operations, or by scouring the battlefield for them.

To address concerns about fear of missing out (FOMO) and pay-to-win mechanics, Beroshi reassured players that the monetization in Helldivers 2 is designed with their enjoyment in mind. “We, at Arrowhead, are gamers too, and we want these Warbonds to feel modern, fun, and in line with our style,” he explained. “The Warbonds are not a pay-to-win system driven by FOMO. Instead, the gear in the Warbonds will continue to accumulate. We won’t retire earlier Warbonds as new ones are released, so players can pick them up and complete them at any time.”

Among the exciting gear available through the Warbond system is the JAR-5 Dominator, equipped with jet-propelled high-damage projectiles, and the SG-225IE Breaker Incendiary, a modified shotgun with incendiary projectiles. These items are part of the Steeled Veterans Premium Warbond.

To gain access to the Warbond and unlock its items, players simply need to follow a few simple steps. First, they must purchase Super Credits, the in-game currency, from the “ACQUISITIONS” store or discover them during missions. Once in-game, players can browse the Warbond catalogues and select their desired Warbond using the purchased Super Credits. Medals, earned through completing missions and objectives or finding them on the battlefield, can then be used to unlock more content from the Warbond catalogue.

In addition to purchasing Warbonds, Super Credits can also be utilized in the Superstore. This store features a rotating selection of unique armor sets that allow players to spread liberty in style. The Superstore regularly refreshes its content to keep things fresh and exciting.

With the release of Helldivers 2 on February 8, 2024, players can look forward to exploring the vast array of content offered through the Warbond system.
