Intel launched its impressive lineup of AI products at its “AI Everywhere” launch event in New York City. Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger highlighted the company’s expansive AI footprint, which spans cloud and enterprise servers, networks, volume clients, and ubiquitous edge environments. One of the highlights of the event was the introduction of the Intel Core Ultra mobile processor family. Built on the Intel 4 process technology, this processor family represents a significant architectural shift for Intel and marks the beginning of the AI PC era. The Intel Core Ultra features Intel’s first client on-chip AI accelerator, the neural processing unit (NPU), which enables power-efficient AI acceleration with 2.5x better efficiency than the previous generation. Alongside its world-class GPU and leadership CPU, the Intel Core Ultra is capable of accelerating AI solutions.

In addition to the Intel Core Ultra, Intel also launched the 5th Gen Intel Xeon processor family. These processors bring substantial improvements in performance and efficiency compared to their predecessors, delivering a 21% average performance gain for general compute performance and enabling 36% higher average performance per watt across various workloads. The 5th Gen Xeon processors are equipped with built-in AI acceleration, providing up to 42% higher inference and fine-tuning on models with up to 20 billion parameters. They also boast a consistent and ever-improving set of MLPerf training and inference benchmark results.

During the event, Intel showcased its partnership with IBM, Google Cloud, and indie game studio Gallium Studios, demonstrating the superior performance and capabilities of the 5th Gen Xeon processors in real-world scenarios. These processors achieved up to 2.7x better query throughput on IBM’s watsonx.data platform compared to previous-generation Xeon processors. Google Cloud highlighted how Palo Alto Networks experienced a 2x performance boost in threat detection deep learning models using built-in acceleration in 4th Gen Xeon through Google Cloud. Gallium Studios, on the other hand, leveraged Numenta’s AI platform running on Xeon processors to improve inference performance by 6.5x over a GPU-based cloud instance, enhancing their AI-based game, Proxi.

Intel’s AI push extends beyond traditional computing platforms. The company recognizes the growing demand for AI at the edge and is committed to bringing AI acceleration to unexpected places. Edge computing use cases, such as personalized restaurant menus, quality control on manufacturing floors, advanced medical imaging, and smart power grids, are driving the fastest-growing segment of computing. Intel aims to make AI hardware technologies accessible and easy-to-use by optimizing AI frameworks and offering foundational libraries. Advanced developer tools like Intel’s oneAPI and OpenVINO toolkit further assist developers in harnessing hardware acceleration for AI workloads and deploying AI models across different inference targets.

To conclude the event, Gelsinger provided a sneak peek of the upcoming Intel Gaudi AI accelerator. Designed for deep learning and large-scale generative AI models, Gaudi is expected to capture a significant portion of the accelerator market in 2024 due to its proven performance advantages, competitive total cost of ownership, and pricing.
