Qualcomm's upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen3 SoC is a powerful chip designed for flagship phones, offering significant improvements in AI capabilities, CPU performance, and graphics capabilities.
- Significant improvements to AI capabilities
- CPU performance has been boosted
- Graphics capabilities offer "console-defying" and "premium level" ray tracing features
Qualcomm’s upcoming next-generation Snapdragon chips have been the subject of numerous leaks, and the latest one reveals details about the 4nm Snapdragon 8 Gen3 SoC designed for flagship phones. The leaked information, shared by MSpowerser, includes comprehensive specifications and images from the chip’s presentation.
One of the key highlights of the Snapdragon 8 Gen3 is its strong emphasis on AI capabilities. Qualcomm has made significant improvements to its Hexagon NPU (Neural Processing Unit), which now offers up to a 98% increase in speed and a 40% enhancement in efficiency compared to its predecessor. The NPU supports up to 10 billion parameters and can handle more than 20 tokens per second with Meta Llama2/Baichuan LLM models.
The CPU performance has also received a boost. The ‘prime’ core can now reach speeds as high as 3.3 GHz, which is 100MHz higher than the previous generation. The five ‘performance’ cores have been upgraded to reach up to 3.2 GHz, representing a significant 400 MHz increase. Additionally, an extra core has been added to this category. The previous triple ‘efficient’ core setup has been replaced with a dual-core configuration that can go up to 2.3 GHz. Qualcomm claims that the new CPU core will be 30% faster and 20% more efficient than its predecessor.
In terms of graphics capabilities, the Snapdragon 8 Gen3 promises “console-defying” and “premium level” Ray Tracing features with support for Unreal Engine 5.2. Qualcomm claims a 25% increase in performance and a 25% boost in efficiency compared to the previous generation chip. The chip also supports Snapdragon Game Super Resolution upscaling technology, allowing for up to 8K resolution with a single spatial pass. Notably, it boasts AV1 decoding capabilities.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen3 is expected to launch in flagship phones next year, with the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra rumored to be one of the first devices to feature this powerful chip.
Overall, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen3 SoC brings significant improvements in AI capabilities, CPU performance, and graphics capabilities, making it a highly anticipated chip for flagship mobile devices in the coming year.
