We are just a couple of days away from the highly anticipated launch of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. This game will take us deeper into the story of Peter and Miles, allowing us to experience the incredible power of the black suit, face new enemies, and test out new abilities. And for those of us who love virtual photography, there’s the added bonus of an enhanced Photo Mode.
Insomniac Games, known for their robust and feature-rich Photo Modes in previous titles, has once again delivered with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. I’ve had the opportunity to spend some time tinkering with the Photo Mode over the past few weeks, and I must say, it’s impressive. For all you virtual photographers out there, here’s a breakdown of what’s returning, what’s new or improved, and some tips on how to make the most of these options in capturing stunning shots of Marvel’s New York City.
Before we dive into the details, I want to assure you that there will be no story spoilers here. Everything mentioned is based on what has been revealed in trailers and hands-on previews so far.
One of the first things worth noting is that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 allows you to assign shortcuts to certain menu options by mapping them to the left or right D-Pad buttons. This means you can quickly access Photo Mode with just a tap. If virtual photography is a priority for you, I highly recommend setting up this shortcut as soon as possible. You can also map other actions to the remaining shortcut button for added convenience.
Once you’re in Photo Mode, you’ll find a familiar UI and menu options if you’ve played the previous two games. The Camera Mode is where you’ll spend most of your time, with tabs for Camera, Lens, Filters and Frames, and Overlays. The Camera tab allows you to control visibility of heroes or enemies, play or pause visual effects, choose suits and suit styles, and tilt the camera. A new Precision option allows for finer adjustments to your camera positioning.
The Lens tab lets you adjust the Field of View and Exposure, as well as control Depth of Field with options for Aperture, DOF Range Near, and DOF Aperture Near. Filters and Frames are self-explanatory, with returning filters from previous games and new styles specific to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The Overlays tab introduces Vignette, Film Grain, and Sharpening effects to enhance your images.
Switching to the Square button opens up three additional menus. Character Mode allows you to choose from preset poses, rotate them, and change facial expressions. Lighting Mode lets you set up three independent lights and adjust the natural lighting of a scene. Sticker Mode offers various types of stickers that can be moved and resized to add extra flair to your shots.
There are also two important options to note. Pressing Triangle hides the UI, locking the menu to prevent accidental changes. If you want to reset everything, simply reactivate the menu and press the Touchpad.
Insomniac’s Aaron Jason Espinoza also shared a sneak peek of an upcoming addition to Photo Mode called Action Figure mode. This feature, set to arrive in a future update, will scale down your hero, making them appear as tiny figures in the world. You’ll be able to place them on various surfaces for creative shots.
In addition to these features, there are other ways to enhance your virtual photography experience in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. One such option is adjusting the game speed. By reducing it to 70%, 50%, or even 30%, you can capture the perfect combat composition or mid-web-swing pose with ease.
You can also experiment with custom poses, artificial lighting, and reframing to create unique and dynamic shots. Insomniac’s Aaron Jason Espinoza recommends using spotlights to make your subjects pop and adding depth to your photos by adjusting the aperture and focus distance. These small adjustments can elevate your shots from simple screenshots to masterful pieces of virtual photography.
Don’t forget to explore Marvel’s New York City and capture the vibrant life it has to offer. From street scenes to rooftop views, there’s always something interesting to photograph outside of combat and story moments. Keep an eye out for art exhibitions and statues scattered throughout the city as well.
Lastly, don’t underestimate the power of environmental lighting, colored backgrounds, and filters. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 offers a variety of lighting conditions throughout the day, so make sure to create manual saves to easily switch between them. If you come across a cool moment with unique lighting, take advantage of it by capturing a photo.
With all these tools at your disposal, you can create stunning and immersive shots in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Whether you’re capturing the acrobatic swings of Peter Parker or the electrifying powers of Miles Morales, the possibilities are endless. So grab your camera and get ready to explore the streets of New York City like never before.
