Sony introduces Crystal LED VERONA: Immersive LED displays for virtual production

Sony has launched its VERONA Crystal LED displays, designed for Virtual Production applications, featuring Deep Black and Anti-Reflection Surface Technology, high brightness, wide color gamut, high refresh rate, and a purpose-built design for easy assembly and stacking.

Sony has launched its latest Crystal LED displays called VERONA, specifically designed for Virtual Production applications. These displays boast market-leading features such as Deep Black and Anti-Reflection Surface Technology, which aim to support filmmakers and content creators.

The Deep Black and Anti-Reflection Surface Technology allows for deep black image expression and low-reflection performance. This technology reduces contrast loss caused by light from adjacent LED displays and studio lighting equipment, resulting in a more seamless blend between virtual and reality. This not only enhances the naturalness of the on-set performances but also reduces the need for post-shooting adjustments, saving time and cost.

In addition to its impressive black levels and low reflection, VERONA offers a high brightness of 1,500 cd/m2 and a wide color gamut covering over 97% of DCI-P3. This ensures realistic shooting locations are accurately reproduced. The displays also utilize high-performance LED driver ICs, enabling a high Refresh Rate of up to 7,680Hz, which minimizes scanline artifacts on camera. The VERONA models are available in P1.56mm and P2.31mm pixel pitch.

Sony collaborated closely with industry professionals to create VERONA, taking into account their feedback and specific needs. The display features a purpose-built design with a 1:1 cabinet that allows production crews to easily assemble a display that matches the desired stage size. The cabinet includes large easy-grip handles, locating pins for alignment, and a lever-type locking mechanism that requires no tools. VERONA is adaptable to various studio spaces, including curved, hanging, and stacking configurations. The frames have been strengthened to support more weight, allowing screens to be stacked up to 7 meters high. The LED surface and edges are protected by surface technology and various protection mechanisms to prevent damage during installation.

Rik Willemse, Head of Professional Displays and Solutions at Sony Europe, expressed excitement about the new displays, stating that they will elevate the realism of Virtual Production and contribute to its growth in the film industry. Sebastian Leske, Head of Cinema Business Development at Sony Europe, emphasized Sony’s unique position in offering end-to-end virtual production solutions and leveraging their expertise in digital cinema cameras and Crystal LED displays.

The new VERONA displays are compatible with widely used industry controllers. The ZRD-VP15EB/23EB works with Brompton Technology’s Tessera SX40, while the ZRD-VP15EM/23EM works with Megapixel’s HELIOS Processing Platform.

Furthermore, the new models boast a 27% decrease in power consumption compared to the current ZRD-B15A model.

Sony’s launch of VERONA follows its recent announcement of a Virtual Production Tool Set aimed at addressing common issues in virtual production and supporting high-quality In-Camera VFX. This toolset includes the Camera and Display Plugin and the color calibrator, which utilize Unreal Engine to connect the real and virtual worlds. These tools allow for the design, visualization, and refinement of virtual production shots during PreVis, enhancing creativity across various content creation applications.
