The ESA shares a list of major piracy threats, including well-known websites such as FitGirl-Repacks and Dodi-Repacks, in order to protect the brands of major game publishers and creators.
- Represents some of the largest game publishers and creators in the global market
- Works together to protect their brands and develop ways to combat game piracy
- Shares a list of top online piracy threats with US authorities on a regular basis
The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) is one of the organizations that represents some of the largest game publishers and creators in the global market. Recently, the ESA shared a new list of major piracy threats, including a new name that may be familiar to those involved in the gaming community. The ESA includes companies such as Electronic Arts, Epic Games, Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony, and Ubisoft, all working together to protect their brands and develop ways to combat game piracy in various formats.
On a regular basis, the ESA shares a list of the top online piracy threats with US authorities, and this year’s list features some notable names. One of the new additions to the list is FitGirl-Repacks, also known as “FitGirl,” a website that typically provides access to repacks of various content on the internet. These repacks are not directly involved in circumventing game protections, but rather recompress the content to make it easily distributable online, often with a dedicated installer. In some cases, these repacks may also include optimizations such as removed or compressed files to reduce the overall download size. However, almost all of this content is considered piracy.
FitGirl has become a well-known name in the online piracy community, essentially becoming a brand in itself. In fact, this group has been active for over a decade and has seen significant growth in recent times, which may explain why it is now on the radar of anti-piracy entities. While the official website of this repacker is blocked in several countries, it still receives thousands of daily visits. According to ESA data, the site received over 22 million visits in July 2024.
Therefore, it may not come as a surprise to see it listed as one of the sources of piracy in the US by the ESA. What’s particularly interesting is that despite the group’s activities spanning over ten years, the site has only now been officially listed. Another site that has been included in the ESA’s list is Dodi-Repacks, which is relatively less known and newer in the market but still considered a threat by these entities.
The ESA’s list also features other well-known piracy websites, including torrent sites and file storage platforms that ignore content removal requests.
