Intel i9-14900K Falls Short in Gaming Performance: Slightly Edges Out 13900K by 1%

October 23, 2023 by our News Team

Intel's 14th Gen Raptor Lake Refresh offers minor improvements, but the i9-14900K fails to impress in gaming performance, with the Ryzen 7 7800X3D outperforming it in most titles and offering a more affordable price tag.

  • Intel's 14th Gen Raptor Lake Refresh brings some improvements to its lineup, particularly in terms of better-binned dies.
  • The Ryzen 7 7800X3D offers better performance, higher efficiency, and a significantly lower price than the i9-14900K.
  • The i9-13900KS is now obsolete, as the difference in real-world gaming performance between the two is a mere 0.2%.

Intel has released its 14th Gen Raptor Lake Refresh for desktop and DIY users, but it seems that the new flagship processor, the i9-14900k, falls short in gaming performance. While it does slightly edge out its predecessor, the 13900K, by a mere 1%, it fails to impress in comparison to its competition.

Quasarzone conducted tests on the Core i9-14900K and found that its real-world performance is not significantly different from the 13900K. In fact, when compared to the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, the i9-14900K lags behind by 4.6% in overall gaming performance, with the Ryzen processor outperforming it in all but three titles.

In terms of specific games, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D maintains a lead of 7% or more over the i9-14900K in roughly half of the games tested. On the other hand, the i9-13900K performs within 1% of the i9-14900K in seven out of ten titles.

Considering that the i9-14900K is priced the same as its predecessor, it can be seen as a minor firmware update with revised specifications and packaging. However, it is difficult to recommend it as a flagship gaming CPU when the Ryzen 7 7800X3D offers better performance, higher efficiency, and a significantly lower price.

Furthermore, the release of the i9-14900K makes the i9-13900KS obsolete, as they are essentially the same chip but at different price points. Additionally, the difference in real-world gaming performance between the two is a mere 0.2%.

Overall, while Intel’s 14th Gen Raptor Lake Refresh brings some improvements to its lineup, particularly in terms of better-binned dies, the i9-14900K disappoints in gaming performance. Gamers looking for the best bang for their buck may find better options with AMD’s Ryzen processors, such as the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, which not only outperforms the i9-14900K but also offers a more affordable price tag.
