Samsung Introduces 32Gbit DDR5 Memory Die: Brace for 1TB Modules

Samsung has launched the industry's first 32 Gb DDR5 DRAM die, which offers increased density and reduced power consumption, paving the way for the creation of record-breaking 1 TB RDIMMs for servers.

Samsung has made an exciting announcement in the world of memory technology. The company has launched the industry’s first 32 Gb DDR5 DRAM die, which not only offers increased density but also reduces power consumption. This development opens up new possibilities for high-capacity memory modules and paves the way for the creation of record-breaking 1 TB RDIMMs for servers.

The 32 Gb memory dies will enable Samsung to build a variety of memory modules. For client PCs, a regular 32 GB module can be constructed using just eight single-die memory chips. Additionally, higher capacity DIMMs that were previously unattainable are now within reach. By utilizing 40 8-Hi 3DS memory stacks based on eight 32 Gb memory devices, Samsung can create 1 TB memory modules. While this may seem excessive, the demand for greater DRAM capacity in fields like artificial intelligence (AI), big data, and database servers is rapidly growing. These high-capacity modules will find practical applications in these areas. In fact, they could eventually enable servers to have up to 12 TB of memory in a single socket.

In terms of power consumption, Samsung’s new dies offer significant improvements. The company claims that by using these dies, they can produce 128 GB DDR5 RDIMMs for servers that consume 10% less power compared to current-generation modules built with 16 Gb dies. This reduction in power consumption can be attributed to the use of the 12 nm-class DRAM production node and the avoidance of 3D stacked (3DS) chips that combine two 16 Gb dies into a single package.

While Samsung has not revealed the speed bins of its 32 Gb memory dies, it is worth noting that finished 16 Gb modules made on the same 12 nm-class technology offer a speedy 7200 MT/s data transfer rate.

Mass production of the 32 Gb memory dies is expected to commence by the end of 2023. However, Samsung has not provided specific details regarding when the finished chips will be available to customers. It is likely that the company will prioritize client PCs initially, although it remains to be seen if this will result in any cost savings.

When it comes to servers, it typically takes time for platform developers and vendors to validate and qualify new memory components. Therefore, while Samsung’s 1 TB RDIMMs are on the horizon, it may be a while before we see them in shipping servers. Nonetheless, this announcement marks an important milestone in the advancement of memory technology and sets the stage for future innovations in the field.
