- Improved PCIe support with 16+4 lanes
- DDR5 memory exclusivity
- Compatible with most existing LGA-1700 coolers
Intel has provided a rare 3D look at its upcoming LGA-1851 socket, which will be featured in the Arrow Lake series of desktop CPUs. This leak, courtesy of Igor’sLAB, offers a unique perspective on the hardware that is not often seen in the world of leaks.
The LGA-1851 socket is Intel’s answer to AMD’s products, with a focus on improving support for PCIe 5.0 lanes. This is a significant upgrade from the previous LGA-1700 series, which only supported 16 lanes. The new platform will support 16+4 lanes, with four dedicated to SSDs. While there are currently no GPUs on the market that utilize the Gen5 standard, this limitation may become less of a concern in the future.
The initial generation of Core Ultra desktop CPUs, codenamed Arrow Lake, will feature 8 P-Cores and 16 E-Cores. Future platforms, such as Panther Lake, are expected to increase core counts. The LGA-1851 platform will exclusively support DDR5 memory, leaving behind DDR4 technology.
Intel’s 800 series chipsets are rumored to include seven SKUs, with the H870 variant potentially being dropped. This move would align Intel’s motherboard products more closely with AMD’s lineup.
One positive aspect for users is that the new LGA-1851 socket should be compatible with most existing LGA-1700 Coolers, as the package size remains unchanged with minor adjustments to the Integrated Heat Spreader (IHS) size.
Overall, Intel’s upcoming LGA-1851 socket and Arrow Lake series CPUs show promise in competing with AMD’s products. With improved PCIe support and DDR5 memory exclusivity, Intel aims to provide a compelling option for PC enthusiasts.
