Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, the highly anticipated spy-thriller adventure, is set to launch on September 26th with an array of technologies. With full Ray Tracing, DLSS 3.5, and Ray Reconstruction, players will be immersed in a world of espionage and political intrigue like never before.
In Phantom Liberty, players assume the role of V, a cyberpunk for hire, tasked with saving the President of the New United States of America after her orbital Shuttle is shot down in Night City’s deadliest district. As VP of Art, Global Art Director at CD Projekt Red, Jakub Knapik explains, DLSS 3.5’s smart technology, powered by AI rendering, allows players to experience the game’s newest location, Dogtown, with sharper images, more accurate lighting, and the highest frame rates possible.
But the technological advancements don’t stop there. On September 21st, Cyberpunk 2077 will receive its 2.0 update, introducing support for nVidia DLSS 3.5 and the new Ray Reconstruction technology. This update enhances the quality of full ray tracing in the game’s Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode, providing players with a more realistic and immersive experience.
The Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode showcases the power of full ray tracing in both Cyberpunk 2077 and its standalone expansion, Phantom Liberty. Full ray tracing, also known as path tracing, accurately simulates light throughout the entire scene, resulting in visually stunning graphics that rival those found in film and TV. This level of realism was previously unattainable in real-time video games due to its high GPU demands.
Previous techniques only addressed a limited number of light sources for ray-traced shadows, reflections, and global illumination. However, full ray tracing models the properties of light from an unlimited number of emissive sources, delivering physically accurate shadows, reflections, and global illumination on all objects. This means that every neon sign, street lamp, LED billboard, car headlight, and other light sources in Cyberpunk 2077 are now ray-traced, providing accurate lighting that enhances the game’s immersive cyberpunk aesthetic.
To achieve this level of realism, NVIDIA RTX Direct Illumination (RTXDI) was introduced. This free SDK allows developers to replicate the appearance of light in scenes with numerous light sources, enabling thousands of objects to emit ray-traced light. With full ray tracing and RTXDI, players will experience enhanced shadowing, more accurate lighting, and better depth and detail.
The Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode also improves indirect lighting by path tracing global illumination from all emissive sources, including the sun and moon. This unified algorithm replaces previous rendering techniques and delivers more accurate lighting of scenes and objects. The result is natural-colored lighting that bounces multiple times throughout the game’s world, creating realistic indirect lighting and occlusion. Reflections now incorporate bounced detail and are rendered at full resolution, further enhancing the game’s cyberpunk aesthetic.
It’s important to note that full ray tracing in Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty requires a powerful GPU. For the ultimate experience, NVIDIA recommends the Geforce RTX 40 Series and DLSS 3.5. These GPUs provide breathtaking performance and image quality, allowing players to enjoy the game at over 60 FPS.
DLSS 3.5 not only enhances the quality and clarity of reflections but also improves the accuracy of global illumination and makes lighting more dynamically responsive. With Ray Reconstruction, DLSS 3.5 replaces hand-tuned ray tracing denoisers with a unified AI model, resulting in even better image quality.
GeForce RTX 40 Series users can combine Super Resolution and Frame Generation with Ray Reconstruction for optimal performance and image quality. Meanwhile, GeForce RTX 20 and 30 Series users can also benefit from Ray Reconstruction alongside Super Resolution.
The performance gains with DLSS 3.5 and Ray Reconstruction are impressive. At 4K resolution, DLSS 3.5 is 4.9X faster on average than native 4K rendering, while providing a more realistic and immersive experience. At 2560×1440, DLSS 3.5 multiplies performance by 3X on average, enabling smooth gameplay on the GeForce RTX 4070 and above. Even at 1920×1080, all GeForce RTX 40 Series users can enjoy Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty at the highest levels of detail.
To ensure the best experience, NVIDIA recommends downloading the Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty Game Ready Driver on September 21st. This driver will optimize the game for full ray tracing and DLSS 3.5.
For those who prefer cloud gaming, GeForce NOW offers the opportunity to enjoy full ray tracing enhanced by DLSS 3.5. With instant access to high-performance GeForce RTX 4080 cloud gaming rigs, players can experience Cyberpunk 207
