- Amazon will become Anthropic's primary cloud provider for mission-critical workloads
- Amazon Bedrock will enable developers and engineers to incorporate generative AI capabilities into their work
- Amazon and Anthropic are committed to the safe training and deployment of advanced foundation models
In a major announcement today, Amazon revealed its plans to invest up to $4 billion in Anthropic, marking a significant collaboration aimed at developing the most reliable and high-performing foundation models in the industry. This partnership will make Anthropic’s safe and steerable AI widely accessible to Amazon Web Services (AWS) customers, thanks to the expertise of AWS in running secure and reliable infrastructure.
As part of the agreement, AWS will become Anthropic’s primary cloud provider for mission-critical workloads, granting the team access to compute infrastructure through AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips. These chips will complement existing solutions for model training and deployment, and the collaboration will also focus on the development of future Trainium and Inferentia technology.
One of the key highlights of this collaboration is the expansion of support for Amazon Bedrock, driven by significant customer demand for Claude. This expanded support will include secure model customization and fine-tuning, empowering enterprises to optimize Claude’s performance using their expert knowledge while minimizing the potential for harmful outcomes.
Developers and engineers at Amazon will have the opportunity to build on top of Anthropic’s state-of-the-art models through Amazon Bedrock. This integration will enable them to incorporate generative AI capabilities into their work, enhance existing applications, and create new and exciting customer experiences across Amazon’s various businesses.
The applications of Anthropic’s technology are vast and diverse. Organizations will be able to leverage Claude 2 for tasks ranging from sophisticated dialogue and creative content generation to complex reasoning and detailed instruction. With an industry-leading 100,000 token context window, enterprises can securely process extensive amounts of information, including technical and domain-specific documents across finance, legal, coding, and more.
Several important organizations across different industries have already embraced Anthropic models on Amazon Bedrock. LexisNexis Legal & Professional, for instance, is utilizing a custom fine-tuned Claude 2 model to deliver conversational search, insightful summarization, and intelligent legal drafting capabilities through its Lexis+ AI solution. Bridgewater Associates, a premier asset management firm, is developing an investment analyst assistant powered by Claude 2 to generate elaborate charts, compute financial indicators, and create result summaries. Lonely Planet, the travel publisher, has significantly reduced its itinerary generation costs by deploying Claude 2, synthesizing decades of travel content to provide accurate and cohesive travel recommendations.
Both Anthropic and Amazon are deeply committed to the safe training and deployment of advanced foundation models. Amazon, known for its industry-leading cloud security, will promote and implement safety best practices on Amazon Bedrock to ensure responsible use of the products and services. Both companies actively engage with various organizations, such as the Global Partnership on AI (GPAI), the Partnership on AI (PAI), and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), to promote responsible development and deployment of AI technologies. In fact, both Amazon and Anthropic independently supported a set of voluntary safety commitments led by the White House in July, emphasizing the importance of safety, security, and trust in the future of transformative AI.
As part of this investment, Amazon will acquire a minority stake in Anthropic. However, the corporate governance structure of Anthropic will remain unchanged, with the Long Term Benefit Trust continuing to guide the company in accordance with its Responsible Scaling Policy. This policy includes conducting pre-deployment tests of new models to effectively manage the risks associated with increasingly capable AI systems.
Training state-of-the-art models requires significant resources, including compute power and research programs. With Amazon’s investment and supply of AWS Trainium and Inferentia technology, Anthropic is well-equipped to push the boundaries of AI safety and research. The collaboration between Anthropic and Amazon aims to responsibly scale the adoption of Claude and deliver safe AI cloud technologies to organizations worldwide.
