ASUS Introduces New Z790 motherboards for Intel’s Raptor Lake Refresh Series
ASUS has launched a fresh lineup of Z790 motherboards designed to accommodate Intel’s upcoming Raptor Lake Refresh series. While the specific name and release date of the processors remain undisclosed, ASUS hints at their imminent arrival.
Similar to MSI and Gigabyte, ASUS has prepared a new set of Z790 motherboards for the upcoming CPU series. These motherboards offer a modest refresh rather than a radical overhaul, but still provide enticing features for gamers considering the LGA-1700 platform, despite its expected phase-out next year. The updated ASUS Z790 series includes the ROG Maximus Z790 Dark Hero, ROG Strix Z790-A Gaming WiFi II, and TUF Gaming Z790-Pro WiFi models.
One notable enhancement in these motherboards is the inclusion of WiFi 7 standard compatibility, except for the TUF model. ASUS emphasizes that these motherboards work seamlessly with their latest 2023 lineup of WiFi 7 routers. To improve wireless networking, ASUS has introduced a new antenna design called the WiFi Q-Antenna, featuring a fresh design, PCB, and internal pin connections.
The Z790 refresh motherboards also offer support for PCIe Gen5 SSDs, featuring a dedicated M.2 slot specifically designed for this type of storage. However, it’s important to note that Intel’s platform is limited to 16 lanes in this standard, which means using this storage type will restrict GPU lanes to 8. Such limitations are absent in AMD’s latest 600-series motherboards. Additionally, the new ROG STRIX-A model boasts an impressive five M.2 slots in various standards.
Another noteworthy addition is support for new front panel connectivity featuring a Type-C connector. This connector not only provides the latest USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 speeds of up to 20 Gbps but also supports Power Delivery 3.0, which can now be directly monitored through the system.
All three motherboards will be available soon. Intel is expected to launch its 14th Gen Raptor Lake Refresh desktop K-series in early October, but ASUS has no need to wait as these boards are not under any embargo.
