Synology, a leading provider of network-attached storage (NAS) solutions, has announced an important change to its DiskStation Manager (DSM) operating system, streamlining the user experience by eliminating the need to download and install additional applications for transcoding purposes.

  • Removes the need to download and install additional applications on Synology systems
  • AAC-encoded content can be natively played back on various devices
  • Streamlines DSM operating system and provides a more efficient user experience

Synology, a leading provider of network-attached storage (NAS) solutions, has recently announced an important change to its core DiskStation Manager (DSM) operating system. Starting from 1 August 2023, server-side transcoding with AAC codec will be discontinued for all DSM versions.

According to Eason Chang, product manager for Synology’s multimedia and photo management solutions, this change is a small but significant enhancement for DSM. He explains that customers will benefit from a leaner operating system, eliminating the need to download and install additional applications on their Synology systems.

This decision reflects Synology’s commitment to continuously optimize its products. AAC-encoded content has become mainstream in recent years, with modern digital media being able to natively play back AAC-encoded content on various devices such as smartphones, Tablets, and smart TVs. As a result, server-side support for transcoding has become redundant and is no longer necessary.

By discontinuing server-side transcoding with AAC codec, Synology aims to streamline its DSM operating system and provide a more efficient user experience for its customers. Users will no longer have to rely on additional applications for transcoding purposes, as their devices can directly play back AAC-encoded content.

This change aligns with Synology’s dedication to delivering high-quality and user-friendly NAS solutions. By optimizing its products and removing unnecessary features, Synology ensures that its customers can enjoy a seamless and hassle-free experience when using their NAS systems.

As a trusted provider of NAS solutions, Synology continues to innovate and improve its products to meet the evolving needs of businesses and individuals. With this change to its DSM operating system, Synology reaffirms its commitment to providing efficient and reliable storage solutions for its customers.

Technology Explained

NAS: Network Attached Storage (NAS) is a specialized storage device or server that provides centralized data storage and access over a network, usually using Ethernet connections. NAS systems are designed to offer a convenient and efficient way to store and share files among multiple users or devices within a home or office environment. Unlike traditional storage solutions, NAS devices operate independently and have their own operating systems and management interfaces. They are characterized by easy setup and configuration, making them accessible even to users with limited technical expertise. NAS devices can offer various features, including data redundancy through RAID configurations, remote access over the internet, automatic backup, media streaming, and even application hosting in some advanced models. As a versatile and user-friendly storage solution, NAS has become a popular choice for both personal and small business use.
