Synology, a leading provider of network attached storage solutions, has announced the release of their latest product, the FS3410. This new addition to their FlashStation family offers high-performance storage capabilities and is designed to meet the needs of businesses that require faster and more responsive storage solutions.
The FS3410 is a mid-range 3000-series unit that combines cost-effectiveness with excellent networking capabilities. It is ideal for a variety of use cases, including high-resolution video post-production, building information modeling (BIM), geographic information systems (GIS), and large-scale CAD projects. With its all-flash performance, the FS3410 is also well-suited for hosting virtual machine storage and productivity applications such as Synology’s secure and reliable private email server, MailPlus.
Powered by the versatile Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) operating system, the FS3410 is a dual-purpose NAS and SAN solution. It features a powerful Intel Xeon octa-core processor and offers optional support for Fibre Channel and faster 40/56GbE networking. With over 356,000/129,000 4K random read/write IOPS, the FS3410 delivers strong performance and is suitable for file servers, block storage, and light application server roles that require high availability, reliability, and leading-edge storage technology.
The FS3410 is fully certified to support popular virtualization platforms such as VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Citrix XenServer, OpenStack Cinder, and Kubernetes CSI. It offers advanced storage management and LUN functionality with support for VMware VAAI and Windows ODX, which accelerates VM performance and enables lightning-fast snapshot creation, recovery, and cloning. Additionally, volume-level deduplication ensures highly efficient storage space reduction of up to 3.15:1.
For maximum service availability, the FS3410 can be paired with another identical unit to create a high-availability cluster using Synology High Availability. This active/passive architecture ensures automatic service transition within minutes in the event of planned or unexpected downtime on one unit.
In terms of VM and infrastructure protection, Synology FlashStations include comprehensive applications to back up and protect VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V virtual machines. With Active Backup for Business, users can easily protect their existing infrastructure and rapidly restore VMs to different systems or even to the FS3410 itself.
The Synology FS3410 is now available through Synology’s solution partners and channel networks. For more information on this powerful all-flash network attached storage server, visit Synology’s website at [link removed].

Technology Explained
Fibre Channel: Fibre Channel, often abbreviated as FC, is a high-speed network technology designed primarily for transmitting data between computers and storage devices. It provides a dedicated and reliable communication channel, typically using fiber optic cables, although copper-based variants also exist. Fibre Channel is known for its exceptional performance, low latency, and high throughput, making it ideal for demanding applications like data centers, storage area networks (SANs), and enterprise-level storage solutions. It supports various topologies, including point-to-point, arbitrated loop, and fabric-based architectures. Despite the advancements in technologies like iSCSI, Fibre Channel remains a prominent choice for organizations requiring robust, secure, and high-performance storage networking.

NAS: Network Attached Storage (NAS) is a specialized storage device or server that provides centralized data storage and access over a network, usually using Ethernet connections. NAS systems are designed to offer a convenient and efficient way to store and share files among multiple users or devices within a home or office environment. Unlike traditional storage solutions, NAS devices operate independently and have their own operating systems and management interfaces. They are characterized by easy setup and configuration, making them accessible even to users with limited technical expertise. NAS devices can offer various features, including data redundancy through RAID configurations, remote access over the internet, automatic backup, media streaming, and even application hosting in some advanced models. As a versatile and user-friendly storage solution, NAS has become a popular choice for both personal and small business use.

SAN: A Storage Area Network (SAN) is a high-speed and specialized network architecture designed to facilitate the connection of storage devices, such as disk arrays and tape libraries, to servers. Unlike traditional network-attached storage (NAS), which is file-based, SAN operates at the block level, enabling direct access to storage resources. SANs are known for their performance, scalability, and flexibility, making them ideal for data-intensive applications, large enterprises, and environments requiring high availability. SANs typically employ Fibre Channel or iSCSI protocols to establish dedicated and fast communication paths between servers and storage devices. With features like centralized management, efficient data replication, and snapshot capabilities, SANs offer advanced data storage, protection, and management options. Overall, SAN technology has revolutionized data storage and management, enabling organizations to efficiently handle complex storage requirements and ensure reliable data access.
