  • Improved speed and efficiency with DSM 7.0
  • Hybrid Share solution for cloud and on-premises deployments
  • VPN Plus solution for Synology Routers is now permanently free

Synology Inc. has recently announced the release of its new operating system, DSM 7.0, which is now available for the majority of its storage devices. This includes enterprise NAS and surveillance-focused products. The initial release of DSM 7.0 received positive feedback for its improved speed and efficiency. The latest update, DSM 7.0.1, brings several advanced functions, such as expedited processing of support requests through Active Insight integration, Fibre Channel support, flash volume deduplication, and a K8s CSI driver to enhance volume management in Kubernetes.

In addition to the operating system update, Synology is also launching Hybrid Share, a hybrid cloud solution that combines the flexibility and scalability of cloud services with on-premises deployments. Hybrid Share allows for simple and fast file synchronization between different locations or offices. It combines efficient local file caching with bandwidth offloading to the cloud, resulting in improved productivity and reduced IT burdens.

Furthermore, Synology has made its VPN server solution for Synology Routers, VPN Plus, permanently free. This decision was made to support businesses worldwide during the COVID-19 crisis and to accommodate the increasing trend of remote work. Under the new program, owners of Synology’s RT1900ac, RT2600ac, and MR2200ac wireless routers can activate perpetual Client VPN Access and Site-to-Site VPN licenses at no additional cost.

VPN Plus is a powerful VPN server that can be easily set up and managed on Synology Routers. It supports various protocols such as SSTP, OpenVPN, L2TP over IPSec, as well as Synology’s own SSL VPN protocol and lightweight desktop client. Users can access company intranet sites through a web-based portal VPN, and there is even an option to provide browser-based remote desktop access to employees.

Owners of XS, SA, FS, NVR, and DVA Series devices can obtain DSM 7.0.1 by visiting the Synology Download Center or upgrading directly from within DSM once the update is rolled out in their regions. Synology Hybrid Share is automatically available to all C2 Storage Advanced Plan subscribers at no additional cost.

These updates and products from Synology provide businesses with enhanced storage capabilities, improved file synchronization, and secure VPN solutions, catering to the evolving needs of modern enterprises.

Technology Explained

Fibre Channel: Fibre Channel, often abbreviated as FC, is a high-speed network technology designed primarily for transmitting data between computers and storage devices. It provides a dedicated and reliable communication channel, typically using fiber optic cables, although copper-based variants also exist. Fibre Channel is known for its exceptional performance, low latency, and high throughput, making it ideal for demanding applications like data centers, storage area networks (SANs), and enterprise-level storage solutions. It supports various topologies, including point-to-point, arbitrated loop, and fabric-based architectures. Despite the advancements in technologies like iSCSI, Fibre Channel remains a prominent choice for organizations requiring robust, secure, and high-performance storage networking.

NAS: Network Attached Storage (NAS) is a specialized storage device or server that provides centralized data storage and access over a network, usually using Ethernet connections. NAS systems are designed to offer a convenient and efficient way to store and share files among multiple users or devices within a home or office environment. Unlike traditional storage solutions, NAS devices operate independently and have their own operating systems and management interfaces. They are characterized by easy setup and configuration, making them accessible even to users with limited technical expertise. NAS devices can offer various features, including data redundancy through RAID configurations, remote access over the internet, automatic backup, media streaming, and even application hosting in some advanced models. As a versatile and user-friendly storage solution, NAS has become a popular choice for both personal and small business use.

VPN: A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a technology that allows users to securely access a private network and share data remotely through public networks. It is commonly used in the computer industry to provide secure remote access to corporate networks, allowing employees to access their work files and applications from any location. VPNs also provide a secure connection for online banking, shopping, and other activities that require a secure connection. Additionally, VPNs can be used to bypass geographic restrictions and censorship, allowing users to access websites and services that may be blocked in their country.
