Intel recently launched their next-generation CPU series, codenamed Meteor Lake, at the Innovation 2023 event. Also known as Core Ultra 100, this new series showcases Intel’s advanced disaggregated chiplet design, which brings increased flexibility and scalability to their chip development process. With this move, Intel is catching up to rival AMD.
While Intel provided detailed insights into the architecture behind Meteor Lake, they remained tight-lipped about the specific SKU variants and configurations. However, leaks have given us a glimpse of what to expect when Intel officially reveals the lineup on December 14th.
One notable feature of Meteor Lake is its integration of the Xe-LPG integrated GPU architecture, based on the Alchemist series. This integration promises higher performance and efficiency, particularly crucial for mobile GPUs. Andreas Schilling from HardwareLuxx shared a photo suggesting that Intel will offer at least two configurations of Xe-LPG chiplets: one with 8 Xe-Cores and another with 4. By separating the GPU chiplet from the Compute, SoC, and IO dies, Intel gains the flexibility to choose the right GPU subsystem for each SKU. This design bears some resemblance to AMD’s Phoenix dies, which also offer varying GPU specs but in a monolithic design.
Intel aims to deliver a 2x performance boost compared to their existing Xe-LP architecture found in Raptor Lake with the integration of Xe-LPG in Meteor Lake. They are particularly focused on supporting gaming at 10W TDP, potentially positioning themselves as a competitor to AMD RDNA3 in the handheld gaming market.
We can expect a full disclosure of Meteor Lake prior to its December launch. It remains to be seen how Intel’s low-end CPUs featuring 4 Xe-Cores will compare to AMD’s “Small Phoenix” silicon.
