AMD is gearing up to release its next-generation Threadripper platform, based on the Zen4 architecture. Leaks have revealed that this upcoming series will bring significant upgrades compared to the Zen3-based Threadripper 5000 series.
Not only will there be architectural improvements, but the entire platform will also embrace modern standards like DDR5 and PCIe Gen5 support. To accommodate these new CPUs, a new socket will be introduced with the TRX50 motherboard series.
Two workstation systems, the HP Z6 G5 Workstation and Dell Precision 7875, have already been spotted featuring these CPUs. The SiSoftware benchmark website showcased two SKU configurations, one being the flagship model Threadripper PRO 7995WX with an impressive 5.1 GHz boost clock, and the other being the confirmed Threadripper PRO 7975WX with 32 cores.
Although there seems to be a discrepancy in the reported boost clock for the 7975WX, it is expected to have a 4.0 GHz base clock, slightly lower than the 7955WX’s 16 cores at 4.5 GHz. The CPU is rumored to have 32MB of L2 cache and 4x32MB of L3 cache.
While the reported TDP reading may not be accurate, it is anticipated that the new Zen4 HEDT platform will require 350W of power. However, CPUs with fewer cores might have slightly lower power requirements.
The rumored lineup is expected to include four models, ranging from 16 to 96 cores. It’s important to note that not all of these models have surfaced in leaks yet, suggesting that some may be exclusive to certain OEMs or may not be part of the plan at all. With configurations offering up to 96 cores, AMD seems poised to cater to a wide range of market needs.
As for the release date, rumors suggest that AMD plans to unveil its next-generation Threadripper in the fourth quarter. This means we are still a few weeks away from the official launch.
