  • Expanded support for PS Remote Play on Android devices
  • Support for larger-capacity M.2 SSDs
  • New options to assist players with collaborative gameplay

In preparation for the upcoming holiday season and the influx of highly anticipated game releases, Sony has announced a new system software update for the PS5. This update, which has been tested by beta participants, brings several exciting features to enhance the gaming experience.

One of the notable additions is expanded support for PS Remote Play on Android devices. Now, more Android smartphones and Tablets can be used to stream games from the PS5 or PS4 consoles, allowing players to enjoy their favorite games even when they’re not in front of their TV. Additionally, the PS Remote Play app is now available on devices running Android TV OS 12, further expanding the options for remote gaming.

Another significant feature is the support for larger-capacity M.2 SSDs. Previously limited to 4 TB, the PS5 now supports M.2 SSDs with a maximum capacity of 8 TB, providing users with more storage space for their games. It’s important to note that the M.2 SSDs must meet specific requirements outlined by Sony.

In terms of accessibility, the update introduces new options to assist players. Users can now assign a second controller to one account as an assist controller, allowing for collaborative gameplay or helping others navigate challenging sections of a game. This feature opens up new possibilities for multiplayer experiences and cooperative gaming.

The update also brings improvements to Voice Command functionality, with users being able to navigate between help content pages and check for new PS5 features and Playstation Plus monthly games lineup using voice commands. However, it’s worth mentioning that Voice Command is currently only available in English for players in the U.S. and U.K.

Furthermore, Sony has announced upcoming enhancements for the PS App on iOS and Android. These features include the ability to react to messages with emojis and preview someone’s Share Screen before joining a party on the PS App.

Overall, this system software update aims to enhance the gaming experience on the PS5 by introducing new features and improving existing ones. Sony continues to listen to feedback from the community and strives to provide a seamless and immersive gaming environment.

Technology Explained

M.2: M.2, also known as Next Generation Form Factor (NGFF), is a computer expansion card format that is designed to replace the outdated mSATA standard. It is thinner and longer than mSATA, which gives it a much higher data transfer rate. The M.2 format measures 22mm in width and can measure up to 110mm in length. It uses the M-key and B-key connectors to interface with PC host systems, and can connect to both SATA III and PCIe for data transfer. Due to its small size, M.2 is often used for ultra-slim laptops and netbooks, as well as in embedded SSDs for tablets and other mobile devices. It is also becoming increasingly popular in the desktop computer industry, thanks to its compactness and fast transfer speeds. This makes M.2 ideal for gaming PCs, workstations, and other demanding applications that require high levels of data throughput.

SSD: A Solid State Drive (SSD) is a modern data storage device that employs flash memory technology to store data electronically. Unlike traditional hard disk drives (HDDs), SSDs have no moving parts, resulting in significantly faster read and write speeds. This leads to quicker boot times, faster application loading, and smoother overall system performance. SSDs are known for their durability, shock resistance, and energy efficiency, making them ideal for laptops, ultrabooks, and other portable devices. They come in various form factors, including 2.5-inch, M.2, and PCIe cards, and are favored for their reliability, quiet operation, and reduced heat generation
