Sony's BURANO camera combines exceptional image quality, high mobility, and versatile recording formats with a powerful 8.6K full-frame sensor, dual base ISO, 16 stops of latitude, and more, making it perfect for capturing fast-moving subjects in challenging lighting conditions.
- In-body image stabilization
- Compact and lightweight design
- Supports more than 70 E-mount lenses
Sony has launched its latest addition to the CineAlta lineup, the BURANO camera. Designed for single-camera operators and small crews, the BURANO combines exceptional image quality with high mobility. It is the world’s first digital cinema camera with a PL-Mount to feature in-body image stabilization. The camera also features a compact housing with a thinner-than-before electronically variable ND filter structure and optical image stabilization mechanism. With the ability to use E-mount lenses, the BURANO supports fast hybrid AF and subject recognition AF, making it perfect for capturing fast-moving subjects.
Thierry Donard, director and producer of extreme sports films, praised the camera’s performance, stating that he couldn’t work without its Auto Focus feature. He also expressed his reluctance to return the camera to Sony at the end of his trial period.
The BURANO boasts a powerful 8.6K full-frame sensor that matches the color science of the Venice 2 camera. It offers dual base ISO of 800 and 3200 and 16 stops of latitude, ensuring stunning image quality even in challenging lighting conditions. The camera can shoot at various frame rates, including up to 8K at 30 frames per second, 6K at 60 frames per second, or 4K at 120 frames per second.
In terms of design, the BURANO is compact and lightweight, making it suitable for filming in demanding environments. It features a rugged magnesium chassis and environmentally conscious materials. The camera also includes built-in optical image stabilization and an electronic variable ND filter for added control and exposure optimization.
The BURANO supports more than 70 E-mount lenses, offering increased choice for filmmakers. It also incorporates design improvements based on feedback from the filmmaking community, such as positioning all menu buttons on the camera operator’s side and placing tally lamps in three locations for easy visibility.
The camera offers versatile recording formats, including the new XAVC H for 8K, XAVC, and X-OCN LT. It is equipped with two new CFexpress Type B memory card slots and supports VPG400 for high-bitrate writing of video data.
The BURANO supports various log recording modes and comes with four new cinematic looks: Warm, Cool, Vintage, Teal, and Orange. It can be used for virtual production and features gen-lock. Sony will release the GP-VR100 Grip remote control for the BURANO’s main unit, allowing for convenient solo shooting setups.
Sony’s Cinema Line, which includes the BURANO, aims to deliver a cinematographic look while meeting the needs of content creators. The line also includes the VENICE, VENICE 2, and various FX models. Sony’s newly launched mobile app, Monitor & Control, can be used with compatible cameras for wireless video monitoring and high-precision exposure determination.
The BURANO, CFexpress Type B memory cards, and GP-VR100 Grip remote control will be available in early 2024. Visitors can get a first look at the BURANO at the Sony stand at IBC 2023 in Amsterdam.
