MaxLinear, Inc., a company known for its data storage acceleration solutions, has some exciting news to share. They will be showcasing their latest product, Panther III, at the upcoming Future of Memory and Storage (FMS) 2024 trade show from August 6-8, 2024. This trade show is the perfect platform for MaxLinear to demonstrate the advanced compression, encryption, and security performance of Panther III.
So, what makes Panther III so special? Well, according to MaxLinear, this storage acceleration solution can achieve some impressive results. They claim that Panther III can deliver up to 40 times more throughput, up to 190 times better Latency, and up to 1000 times less CPU utilization than a software-only solution. These numbers translate to significant cost savings in terms of flash drives and CPU cores. That’s a big deal!
But what exactly is Panther III? It’s not just another encryption or compression solution. Panther III is a comprehensive, All-in-One “storage accelerator.” It combines various storage acceleration functions, such as compression, deduplication, encryption, data protection, and real-time validation, into a single hardware-based solution. This consolidation of features allows Panther III to offload and expedite specific data processing tasks, resulting in improved performance, cost savings, and energy efficiency compared to traditional software-only solutions.
Vikas Choudhary, Vice President of Ethernet & Storage Accelerators at MaxLinear, believes that Panther III meets the needs of both data center administrators and dataset owners. Data center administrators are constantly looking for power-efficient and cost-saving storage solutions in the age of AI, while dataset owners want quick, secure, and accurate data storage and access. Panther III aims to address these needs and represents a significant advancement in data storage technology.
The data storage market is booming, thanks to the rise of AI. According to a report by Fortune Business Insights, the global cloud storage market size is projected to reach a staggering $665 billion by 2032. This growth comes with an increase in power usage, as data centers consume a significant amount of electricity. In fact, a report by the International Energy Agency found that data centers consumed 2% of all global electricity usage in 2022. With AI expected to account for 10% of the data center industry’s power use by 2025, it’s clear that energy efficiency is crucial.
This is where Panther III comes in. It promises to lower the total cost of ownership of data storage systems in two ways. First, it reduces the number of CPU cores needed for common storage operations like encryption and compression. Traditional software-only solutions can require a staggering number of CPU cores for high data throughput rates. For example, achieving a data throughput rate of 200 Gbps using traditional software-based compression and hash functions would require approximately 3,100 CPU cores. Panther III, on the other hand, achieves the same throughput rate using just three CPU cores. That’s a significant reduction in cost and complexity.
Second, Panther III reduces the cost per GB of flash drives needed for storage. By leveraging a 12:1 data reduction ratio, Panther III can significantly increase the effective storage capacity of NVMe drives. For example, an 8-drive 1U AFA storage server equipped with Panther III can transform the effective capacity from 8 TB to a whopping 96 TB. This means organizations can store more data on fewer drives, leading to substantial cost savings.
At the FMS 2024 trade show, MaxLinear will be showcasing two demos to highlight the power and scalability of Panther III. The first demo will focus on the power of offloading, demonstrating how Panther III’s hardware acceleration outperforms traditional software solutions in terms of performance and energy consumption. The second demo will showcase the seamless scalability of Panther III, showing how multiple cards can work together within a single server to maintain high performance, low latency, and efficiency.

Technology Explained
CPU: The Central Processing Unit (CPU) is the brain of a computer, responsible for executing instructions and performing calculations. It is the most important component of a computer system, as it is responsible for controlling all other components. CPUs are used in a wide range of applications, from desktop computers to mobile devices, gaming consoles, and even supercomputers. CPUs are used to process data, execute instructions, and control the flow of information within a computer system. They are also used to control the input and output of data, as well as to store and retrieve data from memory. CPUs are essential for the functioning of any computer system, and their applications in the computer industry are vast.

Latency: Technology latency is the time it takes for a computer system to respond to a request. It is an important factor in the performance of computer systems, as it affects the speed and efficiency of data processing. In the computer industry, latency is a major factor in the performance of computer networks, storage systems, and other computer systems. Low latency is essential for applications that require fast response times, such as online gaming, streaming media, and real-time data processing. High latency can cause delays in data processing, resulting in slow response times and poor performance. To reduce latency, computer systems use various techniques such as caching, load balancing, and parallel processing. By reducing latency, computer systems can provide faster response times and improved performance.
