The PC market is experiencing strong growth, driven by the rise of AI-powered devices and the impending Windows 11 refresh cycle, with Lenovo and HP leading the pack and Apple and Asus seeing significant increases in shipments.
- The PC market is experiencing consistent growth, with a 3.4% increase in shipments in the second quarter of 2024.
- The adoption of AI-powered PCs is driving innovation and enhancing user experiences.
- The impending Windows 11 refresh cycle is expected to further accelerate the market, with a significant impact on customer refresh plans.
The PC market is on the rise, and it’s showing no signs of slowing down. In the second quarter of 2024, worldwide shipments of desktops and notebooks saw a healthy 3.4% increase compared to the previous year, reaching a total of 62.8 million units. Notebooks, including mobile workstations, were the real stars of the show, with shipments hitting the 50 million mark and growing by 4%. Desktops, on the other hand, experienced a more modest 1% growth, totaling 12.8 million units.
This growth is just the beginning, as we can expect even more acceleration in the coming months. The Windows 11 transition and the adoption of AI-powered PCs are set to drive a refresh cycle that will propel the market forward. Ishan Dutt, Principal Analyst at Canalys, expressed his excitement about the industry’s progress, stating, “The PC industry is going from strength to strength with a third consecutive quarter of growth.” He also highlighted the impact of exciting announcements from vendors and chipset manufacturers as their AI PC roadmaps become a reality.
One noteworthy development in the market is the launch of Copilot+ PCs powered by Snapdragon processors. These devices are taking advantage of AI capabilities to enhance user experiences and improve productivity. Apple has also made its mark in the AI arena with the introduction of the Apple Intelligence suite of features for Mac, iPad, and iPhone. These innovations are not only impressive in their own right but also signal a broader trend towards AI integration in PCs.
But it’s not just about AI. The impending Windows 11 refresh cycle is expected to be a major driver of PC demand. Canalys conducted a survey of channel partners, and the results were clear: Windows 10 end-of-life will have a significant impact on customer refresh plans. Most partners indicated that this impact will be felt either in the second half of 2024 or the first half of 2025. This suggests that we can expect even stronger shipment growth in the coming quarters.
In terms of market leaders, Lenovo maintained its position at the top, shipping 14.7 million units in Q2 2024 and experiencing a 4% annual growth. HP followed closely, shipping 13.7 million units and securing the second spot. Dell, however, reported a 2% year-on-year drop, shipping 10.1 million units and ranking third. This decline was primarily due to reduced shipments in the US market, where other top vendors saw growth.
Apple, on the other hand, had a successful quarter, shipping 5.5 million units and capturing a 9% market share. This marked a 6% increase compared to the same period last year. ASUS also had a strong showing, overtaking Acer to claim the fifth position. The success of its gaming PCs propelled Asus to experience the highest growth in Q2 2024, with a 17% annual increase and shipments totaling 4.5 million units.
All in all, the PC market is thriving, and it’s an exciting time for both consumers and industry insiders. With AI integration becoming more prevalent and the Windows 11 refresh cycle on the horizon, we can expect even more innovation and growth in the coming months. So, whether you’re a gamer, a creative professional, or simply someone who relies on their PC for everyday tasks, there’s no doubt that the future of computing is looking bright.
