Seagate is stirring up the tech industry with its new Mozaic 3+ hard drive platform, which is based on heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) technology. This marks the first major advancement in hard drive technology in a decade, but it also raises concerns about its reliability. To address these concerns and promote their HAMR drives, Seagate has shared details about their research and development efforts in a recent blog post.

According to Seagate, the reliability of Mozaic 3+ drives is on par with traditional hard drives that use perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR). In fact, the components of HAMR HDDs have shown a 50% increase in reliability over the past two years. Seagate claims that Mozaic 3+ drives have impressive durability metrics, with their read/write heads capable of handling over 3.2 petabytes of data transfer during 6,000 hours of operation. This is 20 times more data transfer than typical nearline hard drives. The company rates these drives for a mean time between failure (MTBF) of 2.5 million hours, which is comparable to PMR-based drives.

Seagate’s field stress tests, involving over 500,000 Mozaic 3+ drives, have shown that the heads of these drives can last over seven years, surpassing the lifespan of current PMR-based drives. Typically, customers expect PMR drives to last between four and five years with average usage, so these HAMR drives exceed those expectations.
