Samsung's CXL Memory Module Box (CMM-B) is a device that can accommodate up to eight CXL Memory Module – DRAM (CMM-D) devices, significantly expanding memory capacity and offering impressive performance for memory-intensive applications in data centers.

  • Revolutionizes data center infrastructure by enabling composable disaggregated architecture
  • Can accommodate up to 8 CXL Memory Modules, adding an impressive 16 TB of memory to compatible servers
  • Delivers impressive performance with up to 60 GB/s bandwidth and 596 ns latency

Composable disaggregated data center infrastructure is poised to revolutionize the way modern workloads are supported in data centers. However, to fully leverage the potential of emerging technologies like CXL, the industry requires innovative hardware solutions. Enter Samsung’s CXL Memory Module Box (CMM-B), a device that can accommodate up to eight CXL Memory Module – DRAM (CMM-D) devices and significantly expand memory capacity through a PCIe/CXL interface.

The CMM-B from Samsung represents a pioneering offering in its class, capable of housing up to eight 2 TB E3.S CMM-D memory modules and adding an impressive 16 TB of memory to three compatible servers. In terms of performance, this box delivers up to 60 GB/s of bandwidth, aligning with the capabilities of a PCIe 5.0 x16 interface, and offers a Latency of 596 ns.

While a single CXL Memory Module—Box may not match the speed of a dual-channel DDR5-4800 memory subsystem, it still outperforms advanced SSDs by a considerable margin. Moreover, it boasts a substantial capacity that proves invaluable for numerous applications.

The Samsung CMM-B is designed to be compatible with both the CXL 1.1 and CXL 2.0 protocols. It comprises a rack-scale memory bank (CMM-B), multiple application hosts, Samsung Cognos management console software, and a top-of-rack (ToR) switch. Developed in close collaboration with Supermicro, it is expected that this server manufacturer will be among the first to offer the product.

Targeted at memory-intensive applications such as AI, data analytics, and in-memory databases, the CXL Memory Module – Box from Samsung provides dynamic allocation of memory resources. This means that the system can allocate necessary memory when required and share DRAM with other machines when not in use. This approach enables data center operators to optimize their spending on expensive memory, reduce power consumption, and enhance flexibility in their setups.

In summary, Samsung’s CXL Memory Module Box represents a significant advancement in data center infrastructure, offering impressive memory expansion capabilities and performance that surpasses traditional storage solutions. With its compatibility with the latest protocols and focus on memory-intensive applications, this innovative device holds great promise for the future of data centers.

Latency: Technology latency is the time it takes for a computer system to respond to a request. It is an important factor in the performance of computer systems, as it affects the speed and efficiency of data processing. In the computer industry, latency is a major factor in the performance of computer networks, storage systems, and other computer systems. Low latency is essential for applications that require fast response times, such as online gaming, streaming media, and real-time data processing. High latency can cause delays in data processing, resulting in slow response times and poor performance. To reduce latency, computer systems use various techniques such as caching, load balancing, and parallel processing. By reducing latency, computer systems can provide faster response times and improved performance.
