AMD has launched its latest Ryzen Embedded 8000 Series processors, which integrate NPUs based on the AMD XDNA architecture with traditional CPU and GPU elements. These processors are specifically designed for industrial AI applications, offering versatility and adaptability for tasks such as machine vision, robotics, and industrial automation.
In machine vision applications, AI is used to enhance quality control and inspection processes. It also enables robots to make real-time, route-planning decisions and adapt to dynamic environments. Traditionally, AMD embedded products have utilized AMD Radeon graphics processing coupled with AMD CPUs for AI and workload acceleration. However, the new Ryzen Embedded 8000 Series processors leverage the XDNA architecture and its powerful AI engines to enhance AI performance. With these resources, the processors can achieve up to 39 TOPS (trillion operations per second) of processing power, with the NPU alone contributing up to 16 TOPS. This makes them well-suited for demanding industrial computing workloads.
The increased TOPS is made possible by the combination of various AMD architectures, including AMD XDNA in the NPU, AMD RDNA 3 in the GPU, and “Zen 4” in the CPU. These components work together to optimize overall system performance. The Ryzen Embedded 8000 Series processors feature the next-generation “Zen 4” 4 nm core CPU architecture, providing powerful x86 CPU compute with up to 8 cores (16 threads). The advancements in process node technology have improved performance-per-watt metrics compared to previous generation Ryzen Embedded devices, making AI processing possible within a comparable power envelope. The processors support scalable thermal design power (TDP) profiles ranging from 15 W to 54 W, delivering significant improvements in industrial compute efficiency for AI applications.
The AMD Ryzen Embedded 8000 Series processors also offer advanced capabilities and an open ecosystem. With AMD RDNA 3, a single processor can power up to four independent displays at 4K resolution, leveraging hardware decoding and encoding for popular video codecs. The processors provide 20 lanes of on-chip PCIe Gen 4, offering flexibility for specialized accelerators and other add-ons. They also feature dual-channel memory support (DDR5 up to 5600MT/s) with error-correcting code (ECC), ensuring efficient and reliable memory transfer.
To further support developers, AMD provides an open, royalty-free software suite of libraries and inferencing models, along with a software development kit (SDK) for optimized development and deployment. The solution currently supports the Windows operating system and popular AI frameworks such as PyTorch and TensorFlow, with pretrained models available on HuggingFace.
