Micron Technology, Inc., a important player in the semiconductor industry, reached a significant milestone with the inauguration of its state-of-the-art assembly and test facility in Batu Kawan, Penang. The event coincided with Micron’s 45th anniversary and was graced by the Chief Minister of Penang, Yang Amat Berhormat Tuan Chow Kon Yeow, emphasizing the regional importance of Micron’s expansion and its long-standing commitment to innovation and excellence.
Having previously invested $1 billion, Micron plans to inject an additional billion dollars into the construction and full equipping of the new facility over the next few years. This expansion will increase the factory space to a total of 1.5 million square feet, enabling Micron Malaysia to ramp up production output and enhance its assembly and test capabilities. The company aims to meet the growing demand for technologies like artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, and electric vehicles by supplying advanced NAND, PCDRAM, and SSD modules.
Amarjit Sandhu, corporate vice president of Assembly and Test NAND Operations for Micron Technology, expressed his enthusiasm for the new manufacturing facility, stating that it strengthens Micron’s global manufacturing footprint and enables them to deliver high-quality products to customers more efficiently. Sandhu also emphasized Micron’s unwavering dedication to advancing semiconductor development and manufacturing excellence.
What sets the Batu Kawan facility apart is its adoption of smart manufacturing applications, which optimize efficiency, yield, and production quality. This strategic move ensures that Micron continues to deliver world-class products reliably and efficiently. Moreover, Micron remains committed to sustainability, as evidenced by the facility’s design adhering to the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system—the most widely-used green building certification worldwide. By surpassing the American Society of Heating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHAE) standard, the facility reduces energy consumption by over 25%, setting a high benchmark for eco-friendly semiconductor manufacturing.
In 2022, Micron announced that its Malaysian facilities would be powered by 100% renewable electricity, making them the first within Micron’s global network to achieve this milestone. The new Batu Kawan facility aligns with Micron’s sustainability goals, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2050 and zero hazardous waste to landfills by 2030.
The opening ceremony brought together local dignitaries, industry partners, and Micron team members, symbolizing a shared commitment to sustainability, partnership, and progress for both Micron and Malaysia in the Penang region. Notable attendees included representatives from the Malaysian Investment Development Authority, TalentCorp, InvestPenang, the Malaysia Semiconductor Industry Association (MSIA), AmCham, and senior executives from Micron.
Ms. Lim Bee Vian, Deputy CEO (Investment Development) of the Malaysian Investment Development Authority, congratulated Micron on its remarkable achievement, highlighting the company’s contributions to the economic growth of the manufacturing sector in Malaysia. She emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships in driving high-impact capital inflow and achieving Malaysia’s economic goals.
The Chief Minister of Penang, YAB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow, applauded Micron’s presence in Penang and its commitment to advancing the semiconductor ecosystem. He commended the new smart manufacturing facility as a testament to Micron’s confidence in Penang’s capability to support the development of technologies and maintain its position as a semiconductor leader.
As Micron continues to play a vital role in Malaysia’s semiconductor industry, it fosters an inclusive work environment that encourages employees to contribute their diverse perspectives and skills. The company is dedicated to building a culture that values individuals and their meaningful contributions to the organization.

Technology Explained
NAND: NAND technology is a type of non-volatile memory that is used in many computer applications. It is a type of flash memory that is used to store data in a non-volatile manner, meaning that the data is not lost when the power is turned off. NAND technology is used in many computer applications, such as solid-state drives, USB flash drives, digital cameras, and memory cards. It is also used in many embedded systems, such as cell phones, tablets, and other consumer electronics. NAND technology is a reliable and cost-effective way to store data, making it a popular choice for many computer applications.

SSD: A Solid State Drive (SSD) is a modern data storage device that employs flash memory technology to store data electronically. Unlike traditional hard disk drives (HDDs), SSDs have no moving parts, resulting in significantly faster read and write speeds. This leads to quicker boot times, faster application loading, and smoother overall system performance. SSDs are known for their durability, shock resistance, and energy efficiency, making them ideal for laptops, ultrabooks, and other portable devices. They come in various form factors, including 2.5-inch, M.2, and PCIe cards, and are favored for their reliability, quiet operation, and reduced heat generation
