- The PC market has started to slow down, suggesting that the number of shipments may have reached its lowest point.
- The prices and availability of PC components have played a crucial role in maintaining the profitability of vendors.
- The stability of the U.S. economy provided reassurance to small and midsize businesses, leading to a gradual increase in demand for PCs.
According to initial findings by Gartner Inc., the global PC market witnessed a decline of 16.6% in the second quarter of 2023, with a total of 59.7 million units shipped. Nonetheless, there are indications of stability in this market, with consecutive growth observed from the previous quarter.
According to Mikako Kitagawa, a Director Analyst at Gartner, the decline in the PC market has started to slow down, suggesting that the number of shipments may have reached its lowest point. After facing challenges for over a year, there has been improvement in reducing PC inventory, thanks to a gradual rise in demand for business PCs. Gartner predicts that PC inventory will stabilize by the end of 2023, and PC demand will start growing again in 2024.
In the second quarter of 2023, the rankings of the leading vendors in the global PC market remained consistent. Lenovo continued to hold the top position, capturing a market share of 24%. HP Inc., Dell, Apple, Acer, and ASUS likewise maintained their respective positions in the market.
Lenovo witnessed a decrease in shipments compared to the previous year, but observed growth in consecutive periods. The company encountered difficulties in the EMEA and Asia Pacific areas, while experiencing modest declines in Latin America and North America.
In the second quarter, HP Inc. experienced a small decrease in shipments, breaking a pattern of consistent significant declines. While laptop shipments showed modest growth, there was a decline in desktop shipments. HP Inc. had a strong performance in the U.S. laptop market, with a substantial year-over-year growth rate.
Dell experienced a decline for the fifth quarter in a row, as shipments decreased in most important regions. The Asia Pacific market posed significant challenges for Dell, with shipments declining at a faster rate compared to the regional average. Nonetheless, Dell showed relatively good performance in the U.S. desktop market and remained the leading vendor.
Kitagawa observed that there has been a noteworthy improvement in the prices and availability of PC components. This has played a crucial role in maintaining the profitability of vendors, even in the face of pressure to sell off inventory. However, as the PC market starts to rebound and the demand for components rises, the advantageous pricing conditions that PC vendors have been benefiting from in terms of memory and SSD storage are reaching their conclusion.
The PC market in the United States experienced a decrease of 8.6% during the second quarter of 2023. Dell continued to be the leading vendor in terms of shipments, closely followed by HP Inc. Lenovo and Apple also maintained their respective positions in the market.
The stability of the U.S. economy provided reassurance to small and midsize businesses, leading to a gradual increase in demand for PCs. Additionally, educational institutions showed renewed interest in Chromebooks, while government buyers sought Laptops. Unfortunately, consumer demand for PCs continued to be low.
The PC market in EMEA experienced a 14.6% decline compared to the previous year, making it the sixth consecutive quarter of decline. Factors such as political unrest, inflationary pressures, and interest rate increases have negatively affected the demand for PCs. To encourage stronger purchasing trends, it is crucial for business confidence to improve, while consumer demand remains low across all income groups due to inflationary pressures.
The PC market in the Asia Pacific region also experienced a decline, showing a decrease of 26.9% compared to the previous year. The poor performance of the PC market in China, influenced by economic uncertainty and low consumer demand, played a major role in the overall results of the region.
The current findings are not final, and the complete data will be released shortly. Gartner’s PC Quarterly Statistics Worldwide by Region program offers a detailed and up-to-date overview of the global PC market, enabling organizations to stay updated on important matters and their potential global impact.
