Supermicro’s Bold Move into Edge AI
Supermicro, Inc. is making waves as a comprehensive IT solution provider, especially in the realms of AI/ML, high-performance computing (HPC), cloud services, storage, and 5G/Edge technologies. They’re unveiling a fresh lineup of systems that are fully optimized for edge and embedded workloads. This new suite of compact servers is powered by the latest Intel Xeon 6 SoC processor family (previously known as Granite Rapids-D), designed to help businesses supercharge real-time AI inferencing and craft smarter applications across various industries.
As the demand for Edge AI solutions surges, businesses are on the lookout for reliable, compact systems that can process data right where it’s generated. Charles Liang, Supermicro’s president and CEO, puts it succinctly: “At Supermicro, we design and deploy the industry’s broadest range of application-optimized systems from the data center to the far edge.” This latest generation of edge servers is all about delivering advanced AI capabilities, enhancing efficiency, and facilitating quicker decision-making right at the data source. With up to 2.5 times the core count increase at the edge, along with improved performance per watt and per core, these new compact systems are tailor-made for workloads such as Edge AI, telecommunications, networking, and content delivery networks (CDN).
Meet the SYS-112D Series
Let’s dive into the details of Supermicro’s new SYS-112D series systems, which are built to handle high-performance Edge AI solutions. These servers feature the recently launched Intel Xeon 6 SoC with P-Cores, boasting increased performance and higher memory bandwidth compared to their predecessors. But what really sets them apart? They come equipped with AI acceleration, Intel QuickAssist Technology for wireless protocols, Intel vRAN Boost Technology, and the Intel Data Streaming Accelerator—just to name a few.
Take the SYS-112D-36C-FN3P, for example. It packs a punch with the Intel Xeon 6 SoC featuring 36 P-cores, dual 100 GbE QSFP28 ports, and the ability to support up to 512 GB of DDR5 memory. Plus, it has a PCIe 5.0 FHFL slot for a GPU or other add-on card. With a chassis that’s only 399 mm (or about 15.7 inches) deep and front I/O access, it’s perfect for space-constrained environments or for embedding into larger systems.
On the other hand, the SYS-112D-42C-FN8P is tailored for telecommunications, featuring eight 25GbE ports, built-in GNSS, and time sync technology, along with the Intel vRAN Boost. It’s an All-in-One platform designed for various workloads in the RAN network, making it a versatile choice for telcos.
Compact Systems for IoT and AI
Supermicro isn’t stopping there; they’re also rolling out two new compact systems—the SYS-E201-14AR and SYS-E300-14AR—optimized for IoT and AI inferencing at the far edge. Both systems are powered by the 15th Gen Intel Core Ultra processors (codenamed Arrow Lake), featuring up to 24 cores and an onboard Neural Processing Unit (NPU) for AI acceleration. They come with two 2.5 GbE network ports and connectors for HDMI, Display, and USB, making them ideal for enterprise edge applications.
What’s more, the SYS-E300 can be expanded with a single PCIe 5.0 x16 slot, allowing for a PCIe GPU card installation. This means it can ramp up performance for Edge AI applications in sectors like security and surveillance, retail, healthcare, manufacturing, and beyond.
Elevating Edge AI in Data Centers
In the edge data center arena, Supermicro’s edge AI systems are now compatible with the newly launched Intel Xeon 6700/6500 series processor with P-cores. This processor group is crafted for the enterprise data center, striking a balance between performance and efficiency—delivering an impressive 1.4x better performance than the previous generation across a wide range of enterprise workloads.
Supermicro’s 2U Edge AI product family, such as the SYS-212B-FLN2T, combines this new processor with the capability to support up to six single-width GPU accelerators, all in a short-depth, front I/O form factor. This makes it a stellar option for deployment at the enterprise edge, as well as in telco and space-constrained environments.
