Introducing Project G-Assist
At Computex 2024, we pulled back the curtain on something exciting: Project G-Assist. This tech demo offered a sneak peek into a future where AI assistants could transform the PC experience for gamers, creators, and beyond. Today, we’re thrilled to announce that an experimental version of the Project G-Assist System Assistant feature is now available for Geforce RTX desktop users through the nVidia app. And yes, we’ve got plans for GeForce RTX laptop support in an upcoming update!
As PCs become more powerful, they also get more complex. Can you believe that users today are faced with over a trillion possible combinations of hardware and software settings when trying to optimize their systems? From your GPU and CPU to your motherboard, monitors, and peripherals, it can feel overwhelming. That’s where Project G-Assist comes in. Think of it as your personal AI buddy that runs locally on your GeForce RTX AI PC, ready to simplify your tech life.
What Can G-Assist Do for You?
So, what exactly can Project G-Assist do? Well, it’s designed to help you manage a wide range of PC settings. This includes optimizing game and system settings, tracking frame rates, and even adjusting lighting on select peripherals—all with just a few simple voice or text commands. Imagine being able to say, “Hey, G-Assist, how’s my GPU doing?” and getting real-time diagnostics and recommendations to enhance your gaming experience.
G-Assist is powered by a specially tuned Small Language Model (SLM) that’s adept at understanding natural language. It can pull from a variety of NVIDIA and third-party PC APIs to execute actions on your machine. Whether it’s alleviating system bottlenecks, improving power efficiency, or even overclocking your GPU, G-Assist has got you covered. Plus, it can chart and export various performance metrics like FPS, Latency, and temperatures.
On-Device AI: Fast and Free
One of the coolest things about G-Assist? Unlike those massive cloud-hosted AI models that require constant internet access and hefty subscriptions, G-Assist runs right on your GeForce RTX GPU. This means it’s quick, free, and can even work offline.
Under the hood, G-Assist employs a Llama-based Instruct model with 8 billion parameters, allowing it to pack a powerful punch without taking up too much space. It’s fascinating how quickly these compact models are evolving; every few months, they seem to get more capable and efficient!
When you need assistance—say, to optimize your graphics settings or check GPU temperatures—just hit Alt+G. Your GeForce RTX GPU will allocate a bit of its power to help out. Just a heads up: if you’re gaming or running another GPU-intensive application at the same time, you might notice a tiny dip in performance for a few seconds. But don’t worry, once G-Assist is done, your GPU will be back to full throttle.

Empowering Developers and the Community
G-Assist isn’t just for end-users; it’s built with NVIDIA ACE—the same AI tech suite that game developers use to create lifelike NPCs. OEMs and ISVs are already tapping into this technology to craft custom AI assistants, like MSI’s “AI Robot” engine, which powers features in MSI Center and MSI Afterburner.
Logitech is also on board, developing the Streamlabs Intelligent AI Assistant that interacts with streamers and comments on gameplay. And HP is working on AI assistant capabilities for the Omen Gaming Hub.
But it gets even better! AI developers and enthusiasts can extend G-Assist’s capabilities. NVIDIA has set up a GitHub repository where you can find samples and instructions for creating plugins that add new functions. Imagine being able to define functions in simple JSON formats and drop them into a designated directory for G-Assist to load automatically.
Current sample plugins include Spotify for hands-free music control and Google Gemini for more complex conversations and web searches. You can even use a ChatGPT-based “Plugin Builder” to create your own G-Assist plugins effortlessly.
