“RTX 5070 Ti: Manufacturing flaw hampers performance by up to 10%”

February 23, 2025 by our News Team

Nvidia confirms manufacturing defects in some RTX 50 graphics cards, resulting in performance issues of up to 10%, with affected models being the RTX 5090 and RTX 5070 Ti and the issue being related to fewer ROP units than specified.

  • Nvidia has acknowledged the issue with their RTX 50 graphics cards
  • The defect only affects a small percentage of recent graphics cards (less than 0.5%)
  • Customers can obtain replacement units without the defect from their retailers

nVidia has confirmed that some of its RTX 50 Graphics Cards are being released with manufacturing defects. These defects can result in performance issues of up to 10%. The affected models seem to be the RTX 5090 and RTX 5070 Ti, while the RTX 5080 appears to be unaffected so far.

The problem seems to be related to the Render Output Unit (ROP), where the affected units may have fewer ROP units than specified. The ROP is responsible for the final rendering of graphics, so the fewer ROP units a graphics card has, the poorer its overall performance.

Nvidia has acknowledged that a small percentage (less than 0.5%) of its recent graphics cards are affected by this issue. The company claims that the performance loss is around 4%, although benchmark tests on some units have shown more significant drops of up to 10%.

It’s worth noting that the defect can impact units sold by manufacturers like MSI and ASUS, who use Nvidia’s chip as the base. One user who received an MSI RTX 5070 Ti Gaming Trio with the defect reported that their graphics card had 88 ROPs instead of the specified 96.

Interestingly, the RTX 5080, which is based on the same chip as the affected RTX 5070 Ti, has not yet shown any reports of problems. Customers affected by this issue are advised to contact their retailers to obtain replacement units without the defect.
