LG Display’s Fourth Quarter Earnings: A Positive Turnaround

LG Display has just dropped its unaudited earnings report for the fourth quarter of 2024, and the numbers are looking pretty encouraging. The company saw a 15% increase in revenues, reaching KRW 7,833 billion, up from KRW 6,821 billion in the previous quarter. That’s not just a win compared to the last quarter; it’s also a 6% bump from KRW 7,396 billion in the same quarter last year. So, what’s driving this momentum?

Operating Profit: A Notable Recovery

After facing an operating loss of KRW 80.6 billion in Q3, LG Display managed to swing back to an operating profit of KRW 83.1 billion in Q4. That’s quite a comeback! Last year, they reported a profit of KRW 132 billion in the same quarter, so while it’s a step down from last year, it’s a significant improvement from the previous quarter. And let’s not overlook the EBITDA profit, which climbed to KRW 1,306 billion, compared to KRW 1,162 billion in Q3.

Annual Earnings: A Year of Transformation

Looking at the bigger picture, LG Display’s annual earnings for 2024 show consolidated revenues of KRW 26.6 trillion, although they did report an operating loss of KRW 560.6 billion. However, this loss is notably reduced by about KRW 2 trillion compared to the previous year. With a 25% year-on-year revenue increase, it’s clear that their focus on enhancing their OLED-centered business structure is paying off. In fact, the share of OLED products in total revenues rose to 55%, marking a 7% increase from last year.

OLED Products: Driving Revenue Growth

In Q4, OLED products made up a whopping 60% of LG Display’s revenues, thanks to a surge in OLED panel shipments for smartphones. TV panels contributed 22%, while IT devices, including monitors and Laptops, accounted for 28%. Mobile and other devices brought in 42%, and automotive panels rounded it off with 8%. It’s clear that OLED is becoming the backbone of LG Display’s revenue stream.

Future Strategies: Strengthening Competitiveness

Looking ahead, LG Display is committed to enhancing its core capabilities across all areas of its OLED business. The goal? To build customer trust and continue cutting costs while boosting operational efficiency. In the small- and mid-sized OLED sectors, they’re aiming to solidify their competitive edge through stable supply capabilities and technological leadership.

For mobile devices, LG Display plans to secure a differentiated competitiveness by preparing for future technologies that customers will demand. They’re also focusing on reducing seasonal variability and diversifying their product lineup. As for IT products, the company is doubling down on its Tandem OLED leadership and establishing a responsive production system to adapt to market changes.

A Focus on Premium Markets

When it comes to large-sized OLED products, LG Display is all about premiumization. They’re diversifying their product lineup to meet consumer needs, including fourth-generation OLED TVs and gaming monitors tailored for the AI TV era. The strategy here is clear: pursue qualitative growth to enhance profitability through innovative operational structures and cost reductions.

Automotive Displays: A Growing Market

In the automotive display sector, LG Display is committed to stable operations with a technology portfolio that includes Tandem-based P-OLED and Advanced Thin OLED (ATO). They’re not just looking to maintain their position; they want to be the world leader in the growing automotive display market. With enhanced manufacturing and process technologies, they aim to drive stable profits.

Looking Forward

“Despite greater market volatility than ever, we are focusing our capabilities on continuing to improve our business performance via advancing our OLED-centered business structure and strengthening profitability through intensive cost-innovation activities,” said Sung-hyun Kim, CFO and Executive Vice President of LG Display. It’s clear that LG Display is not just weathering the storm but is actively steering towards a brighter future. With ongoing efforts to enhance competitiveness, they’re poised for a turnaround in their annual earnings. Exciting times are ahead for this tech giant!
