The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) has released an updated version of its High-Performance Monitor and Display Compliance Test Specification (DisplayHDR). DisplayHDR version 1.2 features stricter performance requirements for luminance, color gamut, and bit depth, as well as new test requirements for color accuracy, contrast ratio, black levels, and subtitle flicker. These updates aim to address recent advancements in display technology.

Companies can now begin certifying their products under the new DisplayHDR 1.2 spec. However, VESA will continue to allow certification under the previous DisplayHDR 1.1 spec until May 2025 for monitors and May 2026 for Laptops, to accommodate products already in development.

The Display Week Symposium and Exhibition in SAN Jose, California, will showcase products certified under the new DisplayHDR 1.2 spec, along with other VESA standards. The event will take place from May 14-16, 2024.

Roland Wooster, chairman of the VESA task group responsible for DisplayHDR, expressed excitement about the new standard, highlighting the dramatic improvements in display quality over the past five years. He believes that the updated spec will accelerate the adoption of display technology and result in better-quality products for consumers.

DisplayHDR 1.2 introduces several enhancements to the previous versions. Notably, it includes tighter color gamut requirements for improved color accuracy and synchronizes the color bit-depth requirement across all performance levels. The white luminance level testing has also been improved to provide more realistic conditions.

Additionally, DisplayHDR v1.2 introduces new performance tests, including a comprehensive color accuracy test, static contrast ratio tests, an HDR vs SDR black-level test, a black crush test, and a subtitle luminance flicker test. These tests aim to ensure premium performance in HDR mode while reducing power consumption and improving battery life.

Industry experts have praised the new standard. Greg Staten, Distinguished Technologist for Color at HP, believes that DisplayHDR 1.2 raises the quality and accuracy bar, providing customers with displays they can trust. Jang Seok-ho, vice president of LG Electronics’ IT development division, expressed pride in LG’s participation in the testing and logo program, stating that the new standard will enable more realistic images in gaming monitors. ASUS’s Vincent Chiou also commended the performance enhancements brought by DisplayHDR v1.2, highlighting the wider color gamut coverage and unprecedented color accuracy.

Overall, the release of DisplayHDR 1.2 marks a significant step forward in display technology, ensuring higher quality and more accurate visual experiences for consumers.
