VESA Enhances Adaptive-Sync Display Standard, Introduces Dual-Mode Support for Optimal Performance

The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) has announced the release of an update to its Adaptive-Sync Display Compliance Test Specification (Adaptive-Sync Display CTS). This update, called Adaptive-Sync Display version 1.1a, introduces new testing procedures and logo support for displays that can operate at different maximum refresh rates when the resolution is reduced.

One of the key features of this update is the addition of “Dual Mode” testing and logo support. This allows display original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to certify their products at two different sets of resolution and Refresh Rate. For example, a display could be certified at 4K/144 Hz and 1080p/280 Hz. This flexibility caters to users who require high-performance gaming as well as content creation, photography, or video editing capabilities.

Another notable update in Adaptive-Sync Display v1.1a is the inclusion of support for “overclocked” or faster mode options that are not enabled by default in the factory configuration. In order to achieve a higher refresh rate certification for these overclocked modes, display OEMs must ensure compatibility with Adaptive-Sync-enabled GPUs in a non-proprietary manner. The displays must also undergo rigorous compliance testing both in their factory default mode and in the overclocked mode.

It’s important to note that these changes only apply to the VESA Certified AdaptiveSync Display logo program and not the VESA Certified MediaSync Display logo program.

Since its introduction, over 100 products have been certified to the Adaptive-Sync Display standard. A complete list of certified products can be found on the Adaptive-Sync website.

Roland Wooster, chairman of the VESA Display Performance Metrics Task Group, expressed his excitement about the growing availability of displays that offer both high refresh rates and high resolutions. He believes that VESA’s updated Adaptive-Sync Display CTS, with its optional testing for innovative displays, will make it easier for consumers to identify the variable refresh rate performance of these displays.

It’s worth noting that the testing criteria for certification have not changed with the v1.1a update. All products previously certified under the v1.1 specification are still certified under the latest update. The requirements include meeting specific criteria for refresh rate, flicker, gray-to-gray Response Time, video frame drop, and video frame rate jitter at both tested resolutions.

As part of the logo changes introduced in Adaptive-Sync Display v1.1a, display OEMs can now feature the VESA Certified AdaptiveSync Dual Mode logo on their certified products. This logo represents certification at two different speeds and resolutions. On the left side of the logo, the values indicate the display’s maximum certified refresh rate at maximum native vertical resolution, while on the right side, the values represent the alternative certified resolution’s maximum refresh rate and vertical resolution.

The inclusion of the VESA CERTIFIED logo assures gamers that the monitor is capable of delivering an optimized gaming experience, whether they’re playing graphically rich games at UHD 240 Hz or fast-paced FPS, MOBA, or racing games at FHD 480 Hz.
